Barry is, at his core, another kid duped by the League into risking his life for a vague "greater good". His desire to be beloved stems from neglect and a strong want of attention, and he'll say or do pretty much anything to get it. His entire hero persona is built around the Truffaldino archetype from commedia dell'arte (he misremembered the trope's name, however, hence why his hero name is Trinculo and not Truffaldino): bright, flashy, agile. Barry also embodies the flaws of that sort of trope, however. He's immature, a bit vulgar, and doesn't like to take no for an answer or back down--which leads to issues in his pursuit of Venus, who has no interest in him. As he ages, he grows from a comedic sidekick in the League to someone desperate to be seen as more and also more spiteful towards his other League members.
