Fort Kaerndal

With mountains to the north, rivers to the east and west, and a lake to the south, Fort Kaerndal was established as a safe haven in Lidros for any who needed it in case of natural disasters or other catastrophic events.

The location makes the fort nearly impenetrable, but also difficult to get to. Legend holds that during one such event a woman and her son were trying to cross the river and the son didn't make it, falling and being swept away by the strong currents. No one tried to recover his body as it was too dangerous, and by the time things cleared and everyone could leave the mother had died of her grief, screaming at the guards for not trying to save her son and leaving him abandoned.

Ever since there have been reports about the fort being haunted by a mysterious woman in black. Whenever she is seen any nearby children vanish, rumors spreading it was the mother angry at the loss of her son and looking to take any children she can as revenge.

These rumors intensified after the fort was formally abandoned. Those passing by claim to see lights on at night, a mysterious black-cloaked figure wandering the fort itself or the nearby grounds, and hear the sound of a woman crying. Attempts to settle either side of the banks within sight of the fort have been quickly abandoned as children go missing and their parents claim to see their apparitions on the fort's grounds as well.

Some have tried to calm or cleanse the spirit, but every try has ended in failure; it seems to work for a time, but within a few months or years the spirit is back and only seems to grow stronger with each attempt, spreading its influence further as previously safe settlements have children go missing. As such the local authorities consider the fort off limits and do not go near it unless it's passing on the roads for regular patrols.
