Hi,
I’m a Psychiatric Nurse in the UK… happy to shed light on all things mental health related, if I can.

@The-Magician group

Hey! I’m also in the U.K. and things to do with psychiatry have always fascinated me.
I have always wondered what the general treatment is towards children who are admitted to psychiatric hospitals. There’s a common rumour that when you are admitted to those places, you’re simply drugged up and pretty much left to rot, but I wanna know what really happens, if you’re able to shed some light on that?

@Skeus21

Hi,
Nice to “meet” you…
The overall drive when someone is admitted to a ward is to start planning their discharge straight away, and all the laws, policies etc talk about how hospital stays should be as short as possible. It depends on lots of things though, especially where the child has been involved in really high risk behaviours or crimes.
With regards to medication, there are people who are on wards that are not on any meds at all. More commonly though, meds are one of the main forms of treatment, which sometimes is really helpful for people- but sometimes not. Especially with antipsychotics, they can bring along as many problems as they’re solving. Wards are mainly focused on the medical model but I have worked with some brilliant clinicians over the years who use creative and quirky ways to improve people’s quality of life 😊

Ah that’s really good to know, thank you!
What motivated you to become a psychiatric nurse? Like how did you know that was the field you wanted to work in?

@Skeus21

I think it's probably because I have always been fascinated by the mind , perception, different ways of thinking etc and also I worked in substance misuse services of years before I thought about becoming a nurse and really enjoyed watching people start to recover and enjoy life more.
Mental health is a real topic of interest for me, so I suppose it was a natural move.

How are you getting on with your worldbuilding?

@The-Magician group

Ah I see! That’s great!

It’s coming along smoothly, I currently have a Google Doc of so many ideas that I need to transfer over here and develop on, but I’m getting there.
I’m currently working on a few diseases including one called Screeches, and another called Dark Bane.

I would say to draw your inspiration from already existing diseases, or things linked to the disease you want to create. Find out how they work and change it up a bit to make it work how you want.
For example, Screeches. This is a fungus based disease that works by spores and fungi grow into your skin, and since fungus mutates and grows quite quickly this disease is contagious through skin contact and takes mere hours for it to completely infect the surrounding area. It’s also more likely to spread during the night since the victim’s surrounding environment is dark and cool.
Does that help you?

So if I was to make a neurodegenerative disorder at spawns cists and small tumours on the brain, I should look into say like tumour-like brain cancers, degenerate disorders like Parkinson's, and something symptom-based like epilepsy?
