"I'm not brave." He assured, laughing a little.
"I'm not brave." He assured, laughing a little.
“Yes you are.”, she insisted. “You’re the bravest person I’ve ever met.”
"Why?" He questioned, a genuine confusion glimmering in his tone.
Fae tucked her hands underneath her, looking up at him. “Because even though you’ve been through so much, you can act like nothing ever happened. Look at me. I’m scared out of my mind, of everything.”
"Well… you just don't bottle everything up like I do,"
Fae paused for a moment. “That’s still braver. You still have more control.” Her voice trembled with concern.
"It's not. It's weak," he insisted. "I can't ask for help. I'm not brave enough to make myself vulnerable,"
Fae’s breaths were laboured. “Vulnerability isn’t brave.” She shook her head. “And—if you ever need help— I can try.” Her voice dropped.
"Okay." He spoke, an unspoken cue he wanted to stop talking about this.
Fae took the cue, letting her eyes fall shut.
He fell quiet.
Fae opened her mouth as if to say something, but hesitated. “Cruz?”
"¿Sí?" He spoke back in a hush.
She licked her parched lips, nervous. “Would—“ She faltered. “Would you mind walking me home today?” Her voice was small, quiet, lost.
"Not at all," he answered softly.
Oh thank god. She exhaled, relief making her eyes just a little brighter, happier. “Thanks, Cruz. Sorry.”
"Don't apologize." He smiled.
“Sorr— Okay.” The faintest Grace of a smile was imprinted on her dry, bloody lips.

He rested a kiss on them.
She loved the way his lips fit on top of hers, loved the gentleness behind them. She pulled away after a few seconds, not wanting to get up but knowing she probably had to.
"I'm sure Auggie is okay with letting you go home early,"
Fae hesitated. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea, I mean, I haven’t actually done any work today..”
"You haven't slept and you're an emotional wreck," he refuted.
Fae have him a wry smile. “I suppose I am. Then.. I guess. I’ll stay extra tomorrow to make up for it.”, she decided, getting shakily to her feet. Her injured arm bumped against the table, and she winced.
He began to lead her out of the store. August spoke as she left, "Call me if you need me, Fae. I hope you feel better soon.."
“Thank you, sir. I’ll stay extra tomorrow if you need.” She slipped her hand into Cruz’s.
"No need," he allowed patiently.
She gave him an exhausted but grateful smile. “Thanks, sir.”
He dipped his head.
