Marcus blinked, shock settling on his features before a dazed smile broke through. "I did.." he looked up at her, happiness lighting up his features. "I did. Without hesitation."
Marcus blinked, shock settling on his features before a dazed smile broke through. "I did.." he looked up at her, happiness lighting up his features. "I did. Without hesitation."
"Yeah…" She kissed his head. "Maybe I always need to feed you. I don't mind if I have to." She looked down at him. "How does your chest feel?"
Marcus had completely forgotten about his life-threatening wound up until now, the pain washed away by Winifred's soothing caresses and playful words. He blinked, frowning down at his chest. "Pretty good, for once.. you made me forget about the pain. How about you? Are you hurting anywhere?"
She shook her head. Any mark that Luc had attempted to leave on her, she'd left on him with much more fervor. The sick man wouldn't be walking very tall for the next few week. "No… trust me, it isn't me you should worry of."
"Too late," he told her, wrapping his arms around her warm body. "I'll always worry about you.. even after Luc is either dead or behind bars. It's my job as your lover.."
Marcus trailed off, sighing.
"Blegh!" She stuck her tongue out in disgust. "I hate that term. You make me seem like your mistress our something. You my love, my beloved, my one and only. I don't need a lover. I need a mate."
The comment immediately brought back his smile. "Fine, a mate. You have already identified me as a plant, but for now, what kind of animal am I? Are we wolves?" he teased, flicking her nose.
Winifred giggled. "That was an analogy." She countered in her defense. "But for the sake of your amusement… I don't like the connotations of a wolf, their loyal yes…. But thirsty and reckless like the canine cousins the dog. No… you're more feline."
Marcus let out a light laugh. "I hope I'm not a housecat, love. If I'm a feline, they you are a……. a doe. Or.. I;m bad at this. Sorry."
Winifred laughed. "Don't be sorry. This is for fun. There is not correct answer." She kissed him. "Now, what makes me seem like a doe?"
“Your eyes,” he answered honestly, averting his own as pink rose to his cheeks. “They’re so.. expressive. I—“ His blush deepened. “And beautiful. And…….”
Winifred could hardly hold back her squeal. His words made her heart soar. "And….?"
Marcus faltered, taking a moment to regain whatever was left of his composure. “And… you’re the animal that never does anything to harm anyone. You’re the person who doesn’t deserve to be harmed. When people see deers, they get excited, marvel at its grace, its beauty, but they all know it runs deeper than that. You.. you have a good soul. You deserve only good things, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a heartless predator. And——“ Once again, he forgot how to speak, trapped by the look in her beautiful eyes. “Did I mention your eyes?” he said weakly, heart sputtering.
"Marcus…." Winifred was speechless. All she could do was speak his name. Beauty was adequate enough to describe his words to her. Her heart melted and she blushed as she leaned in and kissed him. That was the only way she sat fit to describe her words without speaking.
Marcus squeezed his eyes shut, hands winding their way around to her back and pulling her closer. He pressed his mouth tenderly up against hers, trying to show her how incredibly vast his love was, how much he appreciated her, how grateful he was to be able to do this. “I love you..”
"I love you too." She whispered against him lips. She loved the way his arms held her. She loved the way his hair felt between her fingers. She loved the softness of his lips. She loved everything about him.
"I love you Marcus…." She repeated over and over. "I love you…" Her own personal mantra.
Marcus gave himself up to her completely, letting her kiss him, thread her fingers through his hair, hold him. Because he was hers. Every fibre of his being, hers.
“I love it when you say that…”
Winifred shivered in his arms. She whispered to him, promises of love against his lips. "Marcus, I'm yours. Forever." She said. And she meant it. For as long as she was alive, her heart would belong to him. She kissed him with passion until she couldn't breathe. Only then did she pulled away. Her chest rose and fell with every breath.
Marcus parted his lips to inhale, but found that the force of the kiss had left him unable to draw in a breath, the passion behind it numbing his mouth until any words he tried to say came out a jumbled, incoherent mess. He took her wrist gently into one of his hands and lay it carefully on his chest, directly above his thundering heart, as if to say 'This heart? It's beating for you. You and only you. This is how you make me feel.'
Tears clouded her vision as her heart pounded, her beating in sync with his. This was….love. Nothing else mattered now because this was love. Marcus loved her and she loved him. That was all there was to it. No strings, no back-handed deals, no arrangements. Winifred placed her ear to his chest, gently as not to hurt him, and listen, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Marcus tightened his grip around her warm body, the body that housed such a wonderful, beautiful soul, not from possessiveness, but from the need to hold her close, to protect her. With the rough pads of his thumb, he wiped away her tears, his touch so impossibly gently and soothing.
His whole life, he'd never really known happiness. He didn't remember a single moment, not even before his parents' deaths, that he had felt so blissfully safe. Winifred.. Winifred was his reason for living. For being. His soulmate, the only thing in the world that could ever make him truly happy.
Winifred shuddered at his touch. It was so soft and gentle, full of love and care. She leaned into his hand, nuzzling his palm, pressing small kisses to it.
"Marcus…" She croaked, fighting back the waves that wanted to overtake her. Her eyes reflected the emotions that swam about inside of her. "I want to be yours. In every way, shape, and fashion, I truly do. I… I'm not leaving. If you'll have me, I'd like to stay and become your…" Lover? Girlfriend? Wife? "…personal doctors. It looks like you'll need me."
Marcus's hands trembled as they gingerly cupped her face, almost as if he was suddenly afraid that she would break in his desperate hold. "Of course I'll have you," he said weakly, tugging her closer. "Of course. And if you'd like…." He swallowed. "We could be.. something. We could be together, officially. Not to the public, but.."
She braced her hands on his shoulders, feeling his trembling. "Together as in…." Winifred couldn't help but smile. "A couple?" The words sounded beautiful coming from her mouth. She loved the idea of coming to Marcus, calling him 'beloved' and 'handsome', teasing him and cuddling close together at night. "Yes. Yes, please."
Marcus let out a quiet, exhilarated laugh of pure relief. "Oh thank god… I can't– words can't express how much I love you.. Winifred.." The name danced on his tongue, tasting of honey and sunlight. "I can't believe I'm– I'm– I'm your–"
Winifred gave a hearty laugh and pulled him into another kiss. His lips and tongue tasted wonderfully, she could hardly get enough of him. She held him by his cheeks. "You're all mine…."
“I am,” he agreed weakly, just about ready to do whatever she commanded. “I most definitely am. I’m yours. All yours. Forever. Or as long as you want me for.”
"Forever." she answered him. "I like 'forever'….that's sounds nice." She gave an approving nod.
“Forever.” He tried out the word, his shoulders sagging in relief. It was a good word, full of promises. “Forever.”
Winifred nodded. "Yes, I love it. You and I, forever." She stood. "I'm going to ask for some more rolls. Those were great." She rolled the cart to the door and signaled a butler.
