Marianne rested her head on the other girl’s shoulder. “Everything. I didn’t think this would ever happen outside of my head.”
Marianne rested her head on the other girl’s shoulder. “Everything. I didn’t think this would ever happen outside of my head.”
Mare looked sideways at Marianne. "I know what you mean…" She paused. "Does your family know?"
Marianne shook her head quickly. “Definitely not. How about yours?” She shut her eyes, slipping a tentative arm around Mare’s waist.
Mare cautiously leaned into Marianne. "Me neither. My friend does though."
“Which one? I’ve lost track, everyone seems to want to be your friend..” she joked quietly, tingles running down her spine. She couldn’t believe her luck, couldn’t believe the fact that any of this was happening.
Mare laughed. "You'd be surprised. Anyway, you don't know him. He's out of the school.,"
Marianne nodded, closing her eyes. “You’re the only one who knows about me..” she murmured, content.
"Well, I am honored." She gave Marianne a light kiss on the head. She was impossibly happy in this moment, sitting in silence in Marianne's arms. It was a dream.
Marianne smiled happily, humming quietly as she reached forward to take hold of Mare's slim hand. She rubbed her thumb lightly over the other girl's knuckles.
A thought occurred to Mare and she giggled. "How do you think Ryan would react?"
Marianne paused and furrowed her brow, trying to imagine his exact facial expression. After a moment, she burst out laughing. "Holy shit, that would be priceless. Oh my god."
Mare's shoulders shook with silent laughter. She could forget about Ryan though. How would the school in general react? She said as much to Marianne.
Marianne stilled, smile faltering for a moment. “You want to— you want to tell people? About— us?” If there was even an ‘us’. She wasn’t quite sure what she and Mare were, yet. But she was sure of the fact that publicly coming out made her heart quake in fear and her stomach twist into knots.
The us made Mare's heart skip a beat. She detached herself to face Marianne. "No. Not until you're ready."
Marianne could have melted in relief. “Thank you,” she whispered, taking hold of both Mare’s hands and squeezing lightly. “Is there— is there an ‘us’?”
Mare shrugged bashfully. "Only if you want there to hbe."
A smile broke open Marianne’s face. “Of course I do,” she quickly assured Mare, her face flushed and her hair mussed. “Do you?”
Mare smiled gently and softly kissed Marianne again. "There's your answer."
Marianne grinned bashfully, tugging Mare closer. “I’m glad. I’m very, very glad.”
Mare let herself be pulled towards Marianne. "This is really nice. I didn't think I'd be able to be open about… It with anyone else so soon."
“You and me both..” she murmured, tucking a loose strand of dark blonde hair behind Mare’s ear. “I thought I’d just keep it to myself, eventually fall in love with some guy….”
Mare pulled back to look at Marianne. "Are you bisexual then? Or pan? Or something else?"
“No. Or at least, I don’t know. I’ve never liked a guy, but anything could happen…. I dunno. You?” She pulled her legs up into a cross legged position.
Mare shook her head. "Just plain lesbian," she laughed. There was a knock at the door.
Marianne instantly froze, eyes widening in fear. She gulped, hands beginning to tremble ever so slightly at the notion that whoever was on the other side had heard their conversation.
Mare froze. Her breath caught in her throat and with a shaking hand she went to open the door. Her father was on the other side.
"Bonjour, les filles. What are you up to?"
His gaze went to Marianne for an answer.
Shit. Marianne gave him her most relaxed smile, doing her best to keep it together. “We were thinking of watching some Doctor Who, we were just discussing one of the characters.”
Mr. Vance's shoulders visibly relaxed. "Very nice. Well, I 'm going to head out to work now. Have fun!"
"Merci, Papa. See you later," Mare said, relief audible in her voice. The man lingered a moment, then left.
Marianne’s shoulders sagged as soon as Mr. Vance left the room. She cast Mare a relieved look, trying for a shaky smile. “That was close.”
Mare let out her breath. "No kidding," she said in a trembling voice. "Nice catch though." She paused, looking at her hands. "Maybe… We'll have to be careful."
