Another emotion entered the mix. A strong sense of safety and gratitude. Barry smiled, burying his face in her hair. “I love you..”
Kasey grinned and kissed his cheek lightly. "I love you, too…"
Barry closed his eyes, sighing as he leaned into her embrace. “My three favourite words…”
“They’re mine, too, if they come from you,” Kasey said softly.
The slightest hint of warmth spread through his chest at his girlfriend’s words. “I’m glad…”
“So I think Harper was planning on visiting soon… Would you like to meet the Mask?” Kasey asked, remembering how excited he’d been when she’d told him that the superhero was her brother.
A little of his childhood innocence returned, his eyes widening ever so slightly. "The Mask?" His voice was still flat, emotionless, but there was something in his eyes that hinted at feeling.
“Mmhm. You remember how I said he’s my brother, right? He said he wanted to see me soon, so I told him to come over whenever,” Kasey said with a small smile.
"Yeah, I remembered that he is your brother. And wow.. two superheroes in the same room? Would it be a bit much to… fangirl?" Barry pushed himself to make a joke, hoping that it would eventually bring about some slightly more intense emotions.
Kasey chuckled. “Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me. You should have seen Kenzie when she found out. The girl almost fainted.”
Barry was surprised to find that his chuckle came a little more naturally this time. "I would imagine.. dear god. The Mask."
“Geez… I guess I never realized how popular he really is,” Kasey laughed lightly.
"Your brother," he said slowly, disbelievingly, "Is the Mask, and you didn't realize how popular he was. You're telling me you've never seen a movie featuring him?"
“…No? I don’t really notice stuff like that,” Kasey admitted, giving Barry a sheepish smile.
Barry’s jaw dropped. “You mean you’ve never seen [insert movie name]??? Come on, you’re joking.”
"I'm not, honestly," Kasey said, blushing. "I didn't even know that was a thing…"
Bewilderment came to life across his features, and all of a sudden, he realized that he was feeling again. “Right, our next movie night, we’re watching a superhero movie about your brother. There’s one where his sister is a background character!”
Kasey blinked as her eyebrows shot up. “How do they even know he has a sister? Oh… Well, I guess I did work with him every once in a while…”
“They didn’t, it was based of some fan fiction. She was like, twenty years older than him in the movie, I think. But still, it’ll be fun to watch.”
Kasey crinkled her nose. “Please tell me it’s not as bad as I am imagining it?”
Barry laughed, and this time it was only slightly forced. “It’s good! Her name is Lyra. Very badass. A hypnotist.”
“So definitely not me at all,” Kasey chuckled. “I guess I’ll watch it with you, then. When do you want to?”
“Anytime you feel like it. When are you free?” Barry’s emotions were returning, slowly, and he couldn’t have felt happier.
“I’m free for the rest of today, but tomorrow I have classes and I work, so I’ll be busy until lunch and then again until around six o’clock,” Kasey said, smiling up at Barry.
Barry leaned his chin on top of her head, running his hands slowly through her hair. "Naomi has it, I can ask her tomorrow so we can watch it the day after?"
“I would love to, but I have class all day that day,” Kasey muttered, burying her face in his neck.
Barry drew her as close as possible, sighing. "Aw. The day after that?"
“Hm… That’s Saturday, right? I’m free Saturday,” Kasey murmured as she nuzzled him gently. She was very glad he had his emotions back, it was nice being able to cuddle like this.
Barry buried a hand in her hair, taking a deep breath in and closing his eyes, no longer empty. "Great, it's a date.."
(ack why is emptiness so satisfying to write?)
(Maybe it’s like writing your own feelings out, so it’s kind of freeing?)
Kasey hummed and curled closer to him. “You’re warm…” she hummed softly.
