Marianne allowed herself one quick look at Mare. She looks so pretty when she’s thinking… Quickly, she forced her eyes back to her binder. Control yourself.

Mare finally disconnected from her thoughts to come back down to Earth. She looked over at Marianne who was staring intensely at her binder. It was adorable.
Mare shook her head at herself and turned towards the board to loads paragraphs of writing about Stalin and Lenin. Mare sighed loudly and set about writing it all down.

@blue_topaz

Marianne was having trouble concentrating on her note-taking. Why on earth did Stalin matter to her when she’d been asked by Chelsea, who was on her right, to move over to the left, where Mare happened to be? And now, that as a result of her shift, her elbow was ever so slightly brushing Mare’s?

Pull yourself together!

That’s easier said then done.

She was writing so hard that her pencil tore a tiny hole in her paper, which jarred her out of her thoughts.

Mare felt Marianne's elbow brush hers and she felt a sharp twinge of regret. It was never going to happen between them.
She'd just finished writing what was on the board when she heard Marianne's pencil tear through her page. She jumped and looked over. "You good?" she askee, leaning into Marianne to whisper.

@blue_topaz

Marianne froze up when Mare leaned into her, but only for a second. "Yeah, I'm good, I was writing a little too hard," she replied quickly, glancing down at her torn page and trying to smooth out the hole.
"Just my notes, no big deal."

@blue_topaz

"Yeah, don't worry about it." She faked a smile and turned her attention back to the page, not being able to bear Mare's beautiful face any longer.

Mare also shifted her attention back to the schoolwork. As she was scribbling down a random answer to one of the (numerous) questions, she ran their conversation through her head.
I know CPR. The phrase that had ended everything. She turned it over in her head oblivious to the world.

Marianne could barely concentrate, too occupied with the heavy feeling of guilt settling on her shoulders. Her stomach twisted, she felt close to nausea, thinking about how badly she'd messed up at lunch. Mare probably wanted nothing to do with her now, and it was all her fault.

Mare was suddenly holding back tears. It was always like this. She'd get close to something and then something would ruin it. Always the same cycle. Out of dance, she'd never gotten anything she'd thought she deserved, or even anything she'd thought she didn't deserve, the latter of which applied to this current situation.
Marianne was amazing. Sweet, pretty, understanding. And now there was an impossible barrier between them.

@blue_topaz

Marianne couldn't stop herself from glancing sideways at Mare, and what she saw drew up a hard knot of worry. There were tears in her friend's eyes.

Her guilt deepened immediately and she leaned closer. This was all her fault. "Are you okay?" she whispered softly, brow creasing with concern.

@blue_topaz

Marianne leaned back helplessly, unsure what to do. It was clear that Mare was not fine, but she clearly didn’t want her help, and however much it worried her, t wasn’t her business..

Finally, she sighed and pulled back, sending concerned glances Mare’s way.

Mare inhaled deeply. The teacher continued to ramble on and on about Lenin's Russia and displaying horrible pictures of the famine and grief. All very light-hearted. She continued to try to pay attention, taking notes and answering questions.

After what seemed like eternity, the bell rang to mark the end of the period. Marianne rose from her seat, gathering her binders and glancing at Mare worriedly.

@amber_is_in_a_loop

(Topaz is back :) You feeling a little less stressed then?)
Mare gathered her things at lightning speed and was out the classroom before anyone asked any questions. She sped-walked to her next class and leaned by the door, waiting for the teacher to arrive.

(G’morning)

Marianne slung her backpack over her shoulder, shutting her locker with a resonating clang. She turned away, trying to sort through the turbulence of her emotions and thoughts, but the harder she tried, the harder they became to separate. Mostly, she was crushed by immense guilt for her words at lunch.
This is all your fault.

@blue_topaz

(RS?)

Marianne caught a glimpse of dirty blonde hair up ahead– Mare. Jogging to catch up, she wove through the throng of students, feeling a need to make it up to her friend. "Hey."

(I just woke up it's like noon where I am)
(gentlemen OF THE JURY IM CURIOUS BEAR WITH ME)

Marianne barely kept from gritting her teeth. "He's a total douchebag, my coping mechanism with him so far has been laughing at anything he says. And what you said earlier, about him liking me? I'm 100% sure that's not true."

@blue_topaz

(aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh)

Marianne shook her head firmly. "He's got his eyes on Beatrice. He can't really see past her curves." They exited the school, the warm sunlight dancing on their faces.

@amber_is_in_a_loop

Mare snorted. "Beatrice doesn't have anything you don't"," she said quickly. Then stopped in her tracks. "Shit. I'm so sorry, I didn't mean–" She cut herself off, blushing furiously.
