Barry rose too. Barry’s parents returned the comment, and the couple made to leave, but Margaret pulled her son back. “A word, quickly.”
Kasey glanced back at Barry and gave him an encouraging smile. "Go ahead. I'll meet you outside."
Barry let her go, stomach twisting when he looked back at his mother. He shoved his hands into his front pockets, looking down at her firmly. “What is it?”
Margaret took exactly three seconds to crack. “That girl isn’t right for you,” she blurted out. Barry narrowed his eyes. “Excuse me?”
(Oh, dang…)
Kasey leaned against the passenger's side door of the car, phone in hand as she texted Kenzie back and forth.
Margaret shifted uncomfortably, looking to her husband for stability. “Barry—-“
“No.” Barry cut her off firmly. “I don’t care. Whatever it is you’re going to say, I don’t give a sh*t.” He turned away angrily, making for the door.
Margaret grabbed his shoulder, and he wrenched it away. “I know you don’t— I know that since the incident you haven’t— but you have to trust me on Thai one—“
“I said no. That’s final. Good bye.” He was out the door before either of them could answer.
Kasey glanced up at Barry and gave him a small smile. "Hey. You okay?"
Barry kept his eyes down, shaking his head before getting into the car. He gripped the wheel, hands shaking. “I- sorry.”
Kasey sat down in her seat and turned so she was facing him, a worried look on her face.
"What do you have to be sorry for?" she asked softly.
“My parents,” he said simply, buckling his seatbelt and not meeting her eyes. He placed his hands back on the wheel. They tried to use her as an excuse. They tried to use her as an excuse to get me to break up with the woman I love. Barry almost didn’t believe it. Didn’t believe them.
"It was fine. Really. Unless it was something they said after… Do you want to talk about it?" Kasey asked softly, placing a gentle hand on his.
"Later. I just want to get out of here first." Barry still wasn't looking her in the eye as he pulled out of the driveway, too occupied with keeping his temper intact. He tended to lash out at everything when he was upset, he did not want to lash out at Kasey.
Kasey patted his hand and moved her hand to his leg. "Okay," she said softly.
Barry tried to inhale deeply, sorting out his thoughts as he turned back onto the highway. "Sorry. I– I lash out when I'm angry, I didn't want to lash out at you.@
"It's okay, Barry. Don't worry about it," Kasey said, giving him a small smile.
Too late. Barry just nodded, changing lanes. "Thanks."
Kasey fell silent, leaving him to his thoughts. What could she say that would help, anyway?
After a stretch of silence, he cleared his throat. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have taken you to meet them yet."
"I mean, I was fine… It was definitely very interesting, but it wasn't that bad," Kasey said, smiling over.
Barry kept his eyes on the road. "Yeah," he replied after a pause. "Thanks for putting up with them."
"No problem. I'll do that anytime you want me to," Kasey said softly.
"Hopefully not often." Barry's shoulders relaxed slightly as he exhaled.
Kasey made a noncommittal noise in her throat and glanced at him. "So… What should we do when we get back? Go out to eat, maybe?"
"I was thinking pizza and a movie in my room? I sorta want to relax, sorry." Barry shrugged lightly.
"No, that sounds perfect, actually!" Kasey agreed with a smile. "I'm definitely up for that."
“Awesome.” For the first time since they’d started talking to his parents, a real smile peaked through. “Want to sleep over again? Caleb’s at his girlfriend’s.”
"Sure, why not? I'll get some things from my room and let Kenzie know what's going on," Kasey said, grinning over at him.
(Good morning!)
Barry smiled back, but it was wavering slightly. He was happy, really, but still a bit fragile. “Great.”
(Morning! How're you?)
Kasey patted his leg comfortingly. "Hey. Whatever happened in there, it's okay."
(Fairly okay, you?)
Barry just nodded. “It’ll be okay when I have you snuggled up against my side with some pizza.”
(I'm good. Glad I only work today this week.)
Kasey blushed slightly, and her smile softened. "I'm glad I lose my keys so often."
