"No. I'd advise you to learn more about my culture before making erroneous accusations. Now goodnight." she said, pushing Ru out the door and slamming it shut.
"No. I'd advise you to learn more about my culture before making erroneous accusations. Now goodnight." she said, pushing Ru out the door and slamming it shut.
Ru took a deep breath. So she wouldn't see reason. Perfect. "I hope you enjoy our honeymoon!" He shouted through the door, storming off to his own room. They were to be married tomorrow, and then they would be stuck in a loveless marriage until one of them dies.
"I won't." Aria muttered, pulling off the dress, pulling on her nightclothes, and wrapping herself in the duvet. She fell asleep, knowing that when she woke, the boy would either be dead, or had figured out how to pass the death sentence onto another, readily consenting soul.
Ru yanked on his sleep clothes with stiff movements. He wrote up an order or two to be sent to the servants of the manor where he would be honeymooning and then sent a sizable bonus to the family of the servant. He fell asleep at his desk, writing up ordinances, rules, decrees, and apologies.
Ariana woke up in early morning, before dawn. She stifled a yawn, then got up. The raven appeared in a puff of the black smoke, then flew off through the window (literally, it flew through the glass), leaving a trail of smoke behind it. Ariana opened her window, watching it fly off.
(Okay, this is gonna be a little graphic, but in short, the servant dies. Just warning you if you can't handle graphic deaths.)
The raven flew through the window of the servant boy's house. But the boy was already awake, ready to fight, or run. He ran out of the room, slamming the door shut, but the raven followed. He ran outside his home, and the raven appeared. The boy ran away, through the field, the raven soaring in a cloud of black smoke, closing in. It flew into the boy's chest, disappearing with a small glow. The boy's eyes widened in shock, the mark was fully black like the night sky now. He sank to his knees, black clouds of smoke trailing out of his mouth slowly, until finally they stopped, and he collapsed, dead. His heart had stopped.
Ariana's raven flew back to her, bursting into smoke as she waved it away. She felt refreshed, more alive than ever, and it was good. She went back to sleep, not caring about what came in the morning, what consequences that idiot Cerulean would have her face.
Ru woke up with a headache. The boy's parents had sent him letters of anger and pain, ranting to him about their son's death. He ached for them and wrote back the truest reflection of grief he could manage. And then he was getting swept up in a whirlwind of preparation for his marriage. White tuxedo, rose pinned at the lapel, all that.
Ariana decided not to prepare until there was barely time to do so left. She wanted to put this whole thing off as long as possible.
Ru waited at the altar. His wife to be was late and he was exhausted already. A headache was pounding its way through his brain and he had about 20 different packets of paperwork to write through. Did she have no respect? probably not, he told himself, tapping a foot with impatience.
Ariana was eventually forced to get up by a serving girl, one she was about to curse, but then-
She looks like Elise, but older. Ariana thought ruefully. "What's your name, kiddo?" she asked. "M-Mara, miss." the girl muttered. "Here, have this." Ariana said, tossing a bag of gold coins over to Mara. "I'll be fine now, you run along and do whatever it is you servants do." she said. Mara ran off, obviously confused by Aria's behavior, but grateful.
Ariana walked up to the altar, wearing a black Victorian style dress and a long black veil over her face. Well then, until death do us part. she thought bitterly.
When Ariana finally reached the altar, the ceremony was over surprisingly quickly. Vows were exchanged, however unwillingly, and soon it was time to share a kiss. Ru pushed up Arana's veil, hesitance slowing his motions. He leaned in, pressing a chaste kiss to her lips and pulling back as fast as possible.
Ariana was glad Cerulean pulled back quickly. However, she might as well get something out of this marriage. She should make it a fact that she was the dominant one in this relationship, that he would do as she said, not the other way around. "So, honeymoon then?" she asked, a little coldly. She could even put herself in a position of power in this country, a high position of power, if she played her cards right. Then she would never have to see her drinking home again. She could even declare a war, now that would be exciting. However, it would probably also be unnecessary, so she would probably not declare a war if at all possible.
Ru shook his head. "No. I'm finishing a small side project. We'll leave in a few hours." He hoped Ariana couldn't tell he was lying. He had heard shades could taste truth in your words. He hoped it was only a rumor. What he was doing was not, in fact, a small side project. It was a series of laws preparing himself and his wife for their rise to king and queenhood.
"Liar. Oh, and in case you're wondering, we can. All rumors you hear are true, even if slightly warped." she said with exaggerated politeness to the point of being rude.
Well, this was going to be fun. At least he knew her limits. "All of them? Do you really exclusively eat bear meat and kill animals in hellish ritualistic sacrifice?" He toed the line between cheeky and genuine curiosity. He really didn't have time for this conversation, so he began planning out the wording of everything in his head while still trying to pay attention to Ariana.
"Well, we exclusively sacrifice bears and eat their meat after such sacrifices, that is true." Ariana said nonchalantly.
"Fun," Ru deadpanned. "But if you'll excuse me, I have work to do." He began the walk back to his room, calling for a servant boy to send him some pens and a pot of ink. He would be needing them if he wanted to get everything done in time for his send-off in a few hours. Honestly, he wished he could take his work with him to the honeymoon lodge.
"See you later, babe." she said, blowing a kiss at him and walking off.
Ru took all the time he could working on the new laws, taking so long that a servant had to drag him into the carriage. He had managed to bring several notebooks full of policies, decrees, and laws into the carriage with them and was scribbling on them with fury. Once he began working it was hard for him to stop until he had finished. He was definitely not finished right now.
"Do you ever stop working? By the goddess, you're incorrigible. We'll have to whip that behavior out of you if this marriage is ever to succeed." Aria said casually, but with hints of threat and an undertone of what could have been either malice or, strangely enough, desire.
Ru frowned, not even looking up from his notebook. "If you try to whip anything out of me I'll find myself a new wife." His scribbling had decreased in speed and intensity as he contributed to the conversation. He wanted to pay attention to Ariana despite his dislike for her- it was only polite.
"Oh, honey, I could do things to you that would have you begging for more at the foot of my bed, trust me." she said. "In truth, whipping does actually sound very sexy. But that's beside the point. If I'm going to be stuck with you the rest of my days, I'll at least want to get something out of it, whether that be power of pleasure, or even both. I want to help you run your silly little kingdom, and I want to have us work together. Neither of us want this, but we can quite possibly make it bearable if we, as I said earlier, work together."
Ru signed the bottom of the law with a flourish, looking up from the papers since the first time he'd entered the carriage. "And where has this partnership focused ideology come from?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. He was always less…cheerful after writing up laws. Prince and policymaker were very different mindsets, one sweet and charismatic, one cold and strategic.
"Mainly my near insatiable power and/or sex drive." Aria said. This wasn't entirely true, but she wanted to see what sort of response she would get, and besides, she was a good liar all the same.
The eyebrow climbed even farther up his face and a light blush dusted his cheeks despite his best effort to shove it back down. He'd always had a thing for dangerous women if his continued flings with Elowan were anything to go by. "Well, I certainly hope you're not completely insatiable because I don't intend to bed you."
"Who said you'd do it to me? Now, do you prefer simple scarves or ropes, or do handcuffs suit you better?" Aria asked with complete sincerity. Well, slightly faked sincerity, but only her brothers could tell the difference, she had gotten so skilled at falsehoods.
"I prefer to keep murderers out of my sex life." He turned back to his notebook and began drafting a holiday reform. He'd been weaning the masses off of animal sacrifice for years, and this law was the latest in a line of politely worded reforms that essentially told people "Replace this kind of sacrifice with this ritual'.
"Technically, it was an execution." Ariana said. "Besides, all that paperwork, all that stress, you'll need me. I promise that I'll be good, I won't kill anyone, and that will leave me in deep need of release. Do we have a deal?" she asked.
Ru opened his mouth to refuse, only to find he was actually considering the offer. It would keep her from killing people, that was important. It was clear she wouldn't stop just because he told her to and despite his earlier quip he didn't have the power to replace her. At least, not without years of subtly undermining her credibility and getting the public to rise against her. Still, he wasn't sure he could give her such a personal part of his life. Especially when she clearly wanted him tied down. Helpless. "What kind of sex will we be having?"
Ariana started to snicker loudly inside the coach. "You actually fell for that? Sure, I'd want to shag you if I was bored or didn't have much to do, but I'm not going all out on you. And honestly, you think I'd seriously stop keeping myself alive? Say I ordered you to stop drinking water. How would you react? Anyways, I'm more interested in power than anything else." she said, casually checking her nails.
RU shrugged, thanking the gods that she wasn't being serious. "You'll have plenty of political power as queen, though I doubt you'll know how to use it." That was the truth. As queen, she would be focused on the public sections of ruling, while he would be expected to handle the military and combat. He wished the roles were reversed. He would flourish in a strictly political place, while Ariana would do well in a warzone.
