"Exactly. You can't tell anyone," she repeated.
"Exactly. You can't tell anyone," she repeated.
“Well why not?” He laughed like it was nothing.
"Because…" she bit her lip. She shouldn't be telling him this.
“Because…..”
"Because…. they'd come for us. Again," she added bitterly.
“Like, hunters or fisherman or something?”
"Uh… Something like that," she said slowly.
“Is it something else?”
"I'm not quite sure who exactly they were. But you can't tell anyone, okay?" she pleaded.
“Okay I understand. I won’t tell anyone…”
"Thank you," she whispered.
He wasn’t sure how to keep a secret like this. His life was devoted to science and this was one of the biggest scientific developments in centuries… “Uhh. Yeah. You’re welcome.”
Moxiey's head jolted up. "Is someone coming?" she asked, worried.
Elijah looked up to see a distant man like figure drawing near. “I think so…”
Moxiey dove back into the water without another word. She hid behind the group of rocks.
Eli laughed and pretended to be working intently in his notebook until he found himself drawing her… never know what you might need later.
Moxiey held her breath nervously.
The man drew closer and more visible. He had silvery grey hair and dark colored eyes that, from a distance, appeared black. Elijah recognized him before either said a word. “Mr. Foster ,” the man spoke with conviction. “What are you doing out here?”
“Me?” Eli responded, “I’m, Uhh, working.”
Moxiey breathed quietly, listening to the words.
“Working on what?” He grabbed the Notebook. “Drawing Mermaids??” He laughed. “How childish, you don’t believe in this stuff do you? As a doctor and a scientist this is ridiculous. When will you grow up?” The man threw the notebook in the sand beside Eli.
Moxiey's breath caught in her throat. Drawing mermaids? She slowly peeked out from behind the rocks.
"I was uh, comparing fish to people through the skeletal system for a college project," he responded quickly, he couldn't handle people thinking he was unintelligent.
She moved out enough so she could see them.
"Riiight… You're still a dork," he laughed and turned to walk away. Eli sighed in relief that they hadn't been busted so soon.
Moxiey swam out a little from behind the rock.
Elijah's attention turned to her, the man wasn't gone yet, he wasn't sure it was completely safe for her to come out.
She saw his attention turn to her and swam a little closer, oblivious to the man still walking away.
Elijah shook his head and motioned for her to go back in hiding.
Moxiey noticed the gesture and quickly retreated behind the rocks again.
After the man was gone, Eli threw his shirt to the sand and jumped off the rock into the water. He surfaced with a huge smile.
