Jace hugged himself. “Okay. Thank you, sir.”

Rupert was kind of confused, Why wouldn’t he think I’d let him keep his sweater? Did I do something wrong?, but he just said, “You’re welcome. Let’s just get… hmm… two more sweaters, okay? That way, you can switch them out. Do you want to choose two you like?”

Jake, in an attempt to be helpful, held up a sweater somewhat similar to Jace’s current one and said, “This one goes great with your skin tone.”

Jace blinked at Rupert. “Two? I don’t need that many!” He glanced at the sweater.
“That’s too small!” It looked about his body size.

“How about you try it on?” Rupert suggested. “There’s a changing room right over there.”

Jace flapped his arms, where his sleeves flapped angrily. “I like big sweaters!”

Rupert took the same sweater but a size bigger from the rack. “How’s this one?”

Jace scrutinzized it. “Nooo! I like my sweater!”

“You can keep your sweater,” Rupert reassured him. “But please try this on. You need to have more than one shirt.”

Jace hugged himself again. “No! I don’t want another!”

Rupert desperately wanted to facepalm. They were going in circles. “Jace,” he said softly. “Please, at least try it on.”

Jace shook his head stubbornly. “No! I only want one!”

“You only have to buy one,” Rupert said, exasperated. Why were children so stubborn????

“I want this one!” Jace squeaked loudly.

“…the one you have on?” Rupert asked, immediately regretting it. “I mean… you can buy one! Yay.”

Jace blinked up at Rupert confusedly. “What? I want this one!”

Rupert shook his head. “Okay. Point to the one you want to buy.”

Jake stood off to the side, looking slightly confused.

Jace shook his head stubbornly. “I don’t want one!”

“Ahh, that clears things up,” Rupert nodded. “Jake, please ring up the sweater you are holding.”

Jake nodded, said, “Yeah, yeah, of course,” and practically ran to the cash register.

Jace huffed angrily and stubbornly. He wrapped his arms around his person tighter with a gentle Jace noise.

“You need another sweater,” Rupert said gently. “You only have to wear this one for pajamas, if you want.”

“I don’t need another sweater! I like this one!”

“Yes, you need another sweater,” Rupert said.

Jace shook his head. “No I don’t!”

Rupert sighed. He’d been a parent for less than a day, and it was already hard. “Yes, you do.”

Jace shook his head. “No! I don’t want it!”

“You don’t have to want it, because I am buying it.” Rupert was at a loss for what to argue.

Jace shook his head angrily. “Noooo!”

Rupert sighed. “We are leaving.” He walked over to Jack and, in a low voice, said, “Ship it to my place, please.”

Jack nodded. “Of course, Ron. Good luck.”

“Yeah, I’m going to need it,” Rupert said. “Thanks.” He walked back over to Jace.

When Rupert walked back over, Jace was gone.

“Aw, damn,” Rupert muttered. He glanced around the store, but did not see Jace.
