Jace shook his head, his tummy growling in protest. “No, I’m okay.”
Jace shook his head, his tummy growling in protest. “No, I’m okay.”
“Okay,” Rupert said, starting the engine. “If you’re sure.”
Jace buckled in with a little nod. “I’m sure…”
Rupert drove back to the house, trying hard to ignore the somewhat awkward silence. How do you talk to a kid you met this morning, and who now lives with you? I dunno. I’m winging this. I’m a terrible parent…
Jace put his feet on the seat, picking at his nails. Isn’t Rupert going to yell at me for sneaking off?
“So,” Rupert started awkwardly. “Uh.. when will you be ready to buy a sweater?”
Jace shrugged, keeping his gaze averted. “I don’t care. When you want me to have another…”
“You don’t have to wear it if you don’t want to,” Rupert said.
Jace put his hands together in his warm sweater. “No, I’ll wear it.”
“Okay,” Rupert nodded. “So. Um. Do you want to talk about anything?”
Jace shrugged. “Is it cold? It feels very cold.”
“It’s winter, yes,” Rupert laughed.
Jace shivered. “Is the A/C on? It’s really cold in here!”
“No,” Rupert said after double-checking. “Do you want me to turn on the heater?”
“Please, sir!” Jace squished his legs against his chest again.
“Okay.” Rupert turned on the heat instead of the a/c. “And you can call me Rupert or Ron, if you want…”
Jace shook his head. “I-I don’t think I deserve to.”
“Of course you do,” Rupert said. “C’mon. Please? It’s so awkward of you call me ‘sir’’.”
“It’s formal and respectful!” Jace squeaked. “That’s what-“
“It’s okay,” Rupert said. “We don’t need to be formal.”
Jace pulled his legs tighter against himself. “It’s respectful, though.”
Rupert chuckled. “You don’t have to be respectful all the time.”
Jace blinked confusedly. “Yes I do!”
(Hey, Turtle, there might be a predator on the site, their user is ‘haley’ without an @. Please be careful and report them!)
//okay. thank you for letting me know.
“Not really,” Rupert said.
