"Yeah. 'Just wondering.' That's what everybody says," she muttered.
"Yeah. 'Just wondering.' That's what everybody says," she muttered.
“Sorry, I’m just trying to protect my people and giving a half answer worries me.” Sam argued.
"What do you want me to say? That everyone there hates me? That I'm sold every day - by my mother! - to people who don't deserve me? That the only place I feel like I can express myself is here? And now you're trying to take this away from me too?!" She realized that she'd gone too far.
“I was never trying to take this away from you, Joanna,” Sam said gently, “All I’m saying, is that you can do… whatever it is you’re doing somewhere else. Away from here where it’s safer.”
Joanna tensed. "Why can't I be here?"
“Our… base is located round here. There are people who don’t take kindly to a non magic user trespassing in our territory.” Sam explained.
"You could teach me magic. Then…" She stopped, realizing the absurdity of the idea.
“What? You want me to teach you… magic…” Sam said slowly.
Joanna sighed and dropped her bow. "Nevermind, that's hopeless," she replied, sliding the arrow expertly back into the quiver.
“No, not hopeless…” Sam said, “Just… a long process and lots of concentration and focus.”
Joanna looked at him, somewhat shocked. "So it's possible?"
Sam nodded slowly, “I mean… most people are born with it but yes, it is possible.”
"Would you… be willing to…?" she trailed off from finishing the question in hopes that her point was already made.
Sam sighed and rubbed his face, “It depends if you’re willing to work with me… you’re going to be here a while, you know that, right?”
"Great," she said determinedly.
“Come on.” Sam said, turning on his heel and walking into the darkness of the forest.
Joanna swallowed her nervousness and forced herself forward, into the forest hastily.
“It’s not that scary in here you know.” Sam said over his shoulder.
"I'll be fine," she responded quickly.
"Are you scared? Of magic I mean…" Sam asked.
"No," she said, slightly hesitating.
"You hesitated…" Sam said, frowning slightly at her.
"No I didn't!" she argued defensively.
"Yes, yes you did." Sam replied.
"I don't recall this being a part of the terms to learn magic," she muttered.
"If you're scared of learning then how will you learn?" Sam rolled his eyes.
"I'm not scared," Joanna huffed.
"Great, because if you are then there's no point in trying to teach you." Sam replied.
"I'm not scared," she repeated. "What's the first step?"
"Get you into the city unnoticed." Sam said.
