"I… I don't know." He shrugged.

"I've got Clue, checkers, chess, monopoly."

"I don't care. You choose."

"Let's do chess!" She walked into her bedroom and reached up to try and find the game.

"Alright…" Gij put his face into his hands briefly. I don't think I'll be able to play her. I don't even remember how to play…

She walked back out with the game. "You sure you're fine with chess?"

Gij quickly moved his hands away from his face. "Yeah. It's alright."

"Okay." She sat down and started setting up the game. "Do I need to explain anything?"

"No. I remember how to play." Such a terrible lie.

"Alrighty. You want to be white or black?"

"Black, if that's alright."

"Yup." She turned the board so the black pieces were on his side.

He blinked. How… do I play this?

Sia moved one her pawns forward.

Gij swallowed and moved one of his forward too.

Sia glanced at Gij. He seems… a bit glum. She moved another pawn.

Gij moved another, not realizing he moved it up in taking vicinity of one of her pawns.

Sia captured his pawn.

Gij looked down to a little wooden horse, wondering idly how to play it, instead of moving.

Sia sighed. "Gij. What's the matter?"

"Oh, I just don't remember how to play this piece." He pointed to the knight.

"You move it in an L shape. 2 forward and then 1 to the side." She quickly demonstrated.

"Oh. Alright." He idly moved forward another pawn.

Sia moved another pawn.

Gij carefully moved another and captured one of hers. He resisted the urge to apologize.

Sia moved a bishop.

Gij looked at it, feeling distinctly worried. He didn't move once again.

Sia waited for him to make a move.

"Um… sorry… I can't really concentrate… how does the knight move?"

"L shape." She demonstrated again.
