Jess grins.
"I do, actually, for when I need to hold clothing together."
Jess grins.
"I do, actually, for when I need to hold clothing together."
"Oh, I see."
Kris soon realized she'd run out of things to say. She tossed the rest of her coffee out, but considered finishing it just for show.
Jess chuckles.
They reach the school in silence; the front office just lets them right in - they thought it would be a blessing if there was an incident (they'd be able to get a new job), and also knew Jess very well.
"She's off on her planning period, so we can pin her chair up nicely."
"Perfect." They reached her classroom, vacant. "Hurry, let's go. The pins."
Jess laughs and pulls off her bookbag, opening it and pulling out a case of sewing pins and soving them through the fabric of the chair until there was a nice number sticking up, business side first.
"C'mon, let's go out into the hall and listen."
Kris scurries into the hall, laughing, then quickly composes herself and pretends to do something else. She holds her phone in one hand, leaning against the wall, acting as if nothing happened.
Jess follows after Kris, grabbing her stuff and sitting on the ground, legs stretched out in front of her in a way she technically shouldn't have them since she was wearing a skirt.
She pulls out her phone - covered in various band logos and weird, obscure references to shows she's watched, and scrolls through Instagram.
Someone walks past the two, someone Kris doesn't recognize. She walks into the room and Kris looks up. When she has entered, she looks down at Jess. "Was that her?"
Jess looks up and smiles.
"Indeed," she replies as they both hear a shriek of pain and anger.
Jess gets up and takes off running.
Kris follows, sprinting through the hallways and hoping the thumping of combat boots wouldn't give anything away.
Jess rounds a corner, stepping into a bathroom and pulling Kris in with her, laughing.
"Now that was fun."
Kris realized she was giggling like an idiot and stopped, laughing like what she decided was normal. "Do you-" She composed herself. "Do you do stuff like this often?"
Jess smiles at Kris's giggling, only becoming more amused as the other girl tries to laugh normally.
"You hear about the Great Toilet Fire of '19? That was me." she says as a way of replying.
"I haven't, but now I feel like I should." Kris said, finally breathing, though laughing a little in spite of herself.
"I set fire to all the toilets next to Mr. Rose's room on the third floor. It was glorious, Kris. I swear, people were talking about it for months."
"You must be popular, huh? I'm surprised people talk about anything but you." Kris only realized how weird this sounded to say after it was already said.
Jess chuckles.
"They never found out who did it, that's why everyone was tallking about it. I even spread some rumors about who actually did it; I said at one point that maybe Mrs. Jantsch did it."
"Really? Did they actually believe something like that?"
"Actually, yeah. Everyone knows Mrs. Jantsch hates Mr. Rose. Something about an affair." Jess shrugs.
"Speaking of which, if we do happen to get caught, what then? Kinda hard to pretend we were wrapped up with some other thing in the bathroom after that."
"Yeah. . . I'm an accomplished smooth talker. I can weasel my way out of anything if I want." Jess laughs.
"And besides, nobody checks bathrooms."
"Huh, pretty lenient here." Kris commented.
"It's Los Angeles, nobody cares. You can smoke weed in the halls and nobody would bat an eye. I've seen people do it."
"Damn. Back at my old school they'd send you for getting your phone out."
Jess raises an eyebrow.
"That's harsh. Like, what if your dog just died and your mom was trying to break the news to you? You really think you should just, like, wait all day to see that text and feel shittier later?"
"Exactly! Actually, I think something like that happened once. Might've been a cat or whatever. The boy's mom got really mad at the staff." Kris leaned back on the counters that the sinks were attached to. "Felt like a badass when I put "fuck" in pen on one of the stalls. Could've thought of better but someone was coming."
Jess laughs.
"You get it!"
She grins. "Oh, that's tame. You need to do better. I'm going to show you a true badass moment."
Kris stood upright. "Yeah. Again, could have done better. What do you suggest, then?"
"Well, for starters, this. . ." Jess smirks, taking off her bookbag and going through it, eventually coming out with a black paint pen.
She shakes it, then walks into one of the stalls, starting to write.
After ten minutes, she finishes and steps back to reveal an entire paragraph of lewd and descriptive insults and innuendos, tapping her chin with the end of the pen before stepping forward again and signing it as "From Yours Truly, the Prankster of Freeman Highschool!"
She turns to Kris and grins.
"Well, what do you think?"
"That's⦠a lot for 'starters'." Kris says, inspecting it. She looks back at Jess. "It's great."
