Behind the wall was small cave, cool and dark and damp. Some water from the waterfall streamed inside, and the sound of drops dripping from the ceiling seemed ever present. The girls’ faces were lit up by the bluish light coming through the opening and the waterfall.
Dove looked around, smiling with wonder. “It’s so beautiful,” she breathed. “It’s a good place to stay.”

Dove nodded in agreement, and sat down on the cave floor. She did not want to stand around and get her bruises and muscles sore. She adjusted her shawl around her, looking up at Alice.

She turned the smile and nodded. “Yes. This is much better than…” she hesitated. “Than the manor.” Her smile faded. “Ah, do you wish me to tell you what happened, Your Highness?” She gestured vaguely to her face.

She fiddled with her hands, looking down. She hadn’t known the princess for very long. Though it was an honor to spend time with her like this, she did not feel comfortable telling her the whole story. And besides, she was Princess Alice. Why would she care? Surely she had better things to care about.
“Well… I was just beaten. I had misbehaved. That’s all.”

@Tired-but-passionate

“Maybe so, but it’s not like I can just tell them not to do it…” she muttered, shifting in her seat. She tried to focus on the sound of the waterfall at the cave’s entrance and not her beating heart.

A sad smile grew on her face, and she chuckled. “Oh…” she had momentarily forgotten that her father was the king. “There’s no way I could do that. Besides, I’m sure His Majesty has more important things to attend to.”

@Tired-but-passionate

“You’re too kind…” she muttered, though till doubtful. “But still… there’s no way. Besides,” she shifted in her seat, “it’s not so bad. This doesn’t happen all the time. It is better than having no work and no home.”

Images flashed through her mind: her stepmother locking her in her room so she couldn’t leave, her stepbrothers at the door, itching to feel their fists connect with her rib cage; waiting at the palace gaits, being turned away for being a peasant girl or worse, a witch; and most surprising of all, her late father. ”I’m so disappointed and saddened,” he would moan, ”the family I left behind is breaking apart because of you.”
Then a chill ran through her. She looked at the princess with some fear in her eyes. “With all due respect, Your Highness, I do not know you, and I have never been to the palace. I can’t just leave my fami— “ she put a hand to her mouth to stop herself, then cleared her throat. “I can’t just leave them and go work at the palace if I don’t know if it will be better for me there. Why would you offer this to me? You do not know me either.”

Alice looked at dice a little confused now as she spoke "I'm offering this to you so you are safe if you do not wish to report it I can't make you but I can't sit by and allow it to happen who would I be my job is to protect my people how can I do this if my help is refused? "

Dove shook her head, unsure and rather anxious. “I’m sorry Your Highness, I…” she sighed. “You’re too kind. I suppose I am just… afraid.” She tugged her shawl tighter around herself, not looking at the princess.
