( oki) as dawn approached, things began to stir in the castle. The dragon king was awoken to do his daily duties, his son woken only to be by his side. Though this boy had other plans, after having changed to human like clothing instead of his royal outfit, he left. Wandering down the hill and into hunter territory.
In that same instant, a girl was already running. She loved jogging so early because it gave her a chance to breathe the fresh morning air and she could feel the light breeze in her hair.
She heard the sound of a shot and jumped, before thinking that the hunters were already there waiting patiently.
"Maybe it wasn't a good idea … better tell the hunters that I'm here. At least they won't shoot me."
Hiro heard the shot, looking down the path he reliesed he had left too many tracks. “ shift..” he mumbled. His body seemed to Mend into a lava dragon, setting fire to the ground he walked on.
Ruby heard the sound of some leaves crunching and turned around to figure out who had caused the sound. "Hey. Who's there?"
Hiro had heard the female like voice, and to her response he emitted a low growl. But as he was walking he had stepped in one of the traps the hunters laid, yelping out in pain.
The growl caught Ruby's attention. The brunette tried to think from which animal the sound might come, but she couldn't think of anyone in particular. "Uh?" she murmured as she heard a yelp of pain and began to run in the direction she was coming from. There she saw a group of hunters, all around a trap.
"What's going on here? What have you caught?"
“ get along girl, nothing to see. “ one of the gruffly men said, shooing her away.
Hiro kept trying to pull out of the trap, small holes from the trap had started bleeding, a fluid that looked a lot like molten metal. His protective growl kept the hunters at bay, but he was getting weaker by the moment.
The girl sighed. She tried to think of what to do to get the hunters to tell her what was going on, or at least to find out which animal was captured. Men blocked her view and she couldn't see anything even though she jumped quite high. Ruby whispered a couple of bad words to herself, then she broke off. She took a small knife and approached the hunters menacingly. The men turned to her. "What if I ask you please?" she muttered, making sure to keep the knife in plain sight. She wanted to try to help the animal that was trapped, even though she didn't know why.
The men seemed to hesitate, one of them chuckling darkly. “ okay kid, don’t get your self killed..” he said and walked backwards, opening a hole for her. Inside the circle was hiro, trying to pull himself out of the trap and yelling for every time he failed. Finally he laid down, dizzy and nauseous from the blood loss he accepted his fate and wished one would finish him off already.
The girl swallowed loudly. "O-oi!" she yelled "What the …" she stammered some nonsense for a couple of seconds before approaching cautiously. "Um … wow. I've never seen such an animal. What do you want to do with him?" She cautiously touched the ends of the trap, quickly withdrawing her hand. "He is suffering"
“ young one, that would be what you call a dragon. And by his size I’d say he’s royalty. That means if we harvest his blood we could make a couple million. “ he paused when she had said he was suffering “ not a soul but yours seems to care. I’m surprised he didn’t snap at you for being that close.”
Hiro noticed the girl through hazy vision, her hand was close to the trap, hoping she’d take him out of it he seemed to find some strength for survival. And then she pulled her hand away, what was she doing? He needed out of this trap, and for some reason every instinct was telling him he needed to stay by her side.
"A couple of million? Wow, that's a lot. Listen, free him. It's full of animals around here, get another one."
"What the hell am I doing?" thought Ruby "Why do I care so much?" She looked at the trap again and met the dragon's aching gaze once more. "Ah yes, that's why"
The black-haired girl approached the trap again and calmed down when she saw that the animal was not going to attack her. Keeping the knife in plain sight she attempted to push the hunters away in order to free the dragon. "Listen, can I do something to convince you to let him go? I don't really want to start a fight, but I could do it if it were really necessary … but if you have another idea, I'll be happy to listen to it"
"We just have to finish it quickly" she thought.
One of the hunters scoffed, apparently understanding her reasoning. Walking away, they left the girl with the dying dragon.
Hiro looked up to the woman, having seen the gaze in her eyes. He couldn’t understand English, as his native language was draconian. His eyes shifted from the knife to her. Unsure if she was going to hurt the men behind her or him.
