"Ah… there are a lot in this world," Matthew admitted. "That's why knowing Common is so important- it means that you're able to understand others, and communicate that you're intelligent too."
"Ah… there are a lot in this world," Matthew admitted. "That's why knowing Common is so important- it means that you're able to understand others, and communicate that you're intelligent too."
She nodded again. "Very few things other than humans can speak, and even so, it's not really communication. A few of our birds can mimic human speech, but they don't really know what they're saying, so you can't have a conversation or anything. I know some apes have been able to use sign language before, so I guess that's close."
"Ah… so language is your measure as well, then," Matthew noted. "And everything that can't speak is seen as a lower species, right?"
"Well, yeah, more or less…" She shrugged. "We keep some animals as pets, after all."
"We do too, after all." Matthew looked down at Fluff, smiling.
She nodded a bit. "I don't think there's any animals in our world that are on the same plane as people. You said you had some here, right?"
"Ah, yeah- I think." Matthew chuckled some, not understanding.
"Some animals that can talk like people do. Didn't you mention that earlier?"
"Ah, yeah. Usually, though, the cut off is being able to form full sentences and communicate predominantly through words. Like, the chicks understand who their dad is, and will be able to say a few other words too." Matthew smiled some.
Rowan's mother nodded a bit. "Yeah, I guess that makes sense. How much can the chicks learn to say?" She asked curiously.
"Well, I've heard people say they'd heard birds talking in one and two-word sentences like one might expect from a child," Matthew explained.
"Interesting. Maybe these ones will learn even more since you're sort of raising them." She laughed softly.
"Maybe. Who knows, they might even make it to the threshold." Matthew chuckled some, looking down at the sleeping children.
She nodded a bit and looked over at them as well. "I'm sure they'll do great with you and Rowan raising them."
"Yeah…" Matthew smiled still, looking down to her in turn. "Not to mention they'll have such a wonderful grandmother."
She smiled gently. "I'm glad you think so. You know, I've been waiting a while for Rowan to get married and adopt some kids."
"Well, he's managed to adopt the children, at least. And hopefully, he will find someone to settle down with that makes him happy." Matthew smiled some, just a bit bittersweet. He didn't think he would be that man.
"Well, we're living here now." Rowan's mother smiled up at Matthew. You definitely have a chance, you know.
"Yes, he is. Hopefully he'll find someone who doesn't mind being grounded with him." Matthew didn't but it was still hard to think Rowan would want him like that.
She sighed softly. He's clueless, isn't he? "Well, Rowan is a bit nervous with being touched unless he trusts the person, so he tends to get clingy with people he likes."
Matthew looked down at the sleeping man in his arms, smiling some.
"I'm glad he trusts me, then." He blushed softly at the thought of Rowan liking him.
"Mhmm. And he likes to spend as much time with them as possible." She went on, trying to get Matthew to take the hint.
"Well, I'm sure once he meets more people he'll find just the right man for him!" Matthew smiled. He figured Rowan was just like this with him because Matthew was the only man he'd really interacted with.
She sighed again. "Matthew, he's literally kissed you before. I think he likes you."
Matthew's face turned a deep red at this.
"A-ah…"
"You really are fantastic at not taking the hint, huh? Rowan doesn't exactly go around kissing everyone he sees, you know."
"Y-Yeah, I've- I've been told I'm clueless about these things…" Matthew looked down to Rowan, still blushing.
She rolled her eyes a bit. "Well, consider yourself lucky. And take care of him."
"I will, for sure," Matthew said, looking up. He smiled a bit, hugging Rowan a bit closer to himself.
She nodded and kept walking, humming softly to herself. "I'm sure you'll learn a lot about him in the time you spend together, hmm?"
