A truck driver who spends most of their day driving and listening to podcasts comes across a child, hitchhiking. What they learn is that they child is trying to find their brother, and the monsters that took him away. The truck driver is unfortunately good-hearted, and decides to quit their job and obligations to help.

Name: Rose Boulder
Age: 39
Gender: Trans man, he/him
Appearance: Rose is short, scruffy, and pale-skinned, with a smattering of freckles across his face. His hair is in a longish almost-mullet from never bothering to get it properly cut, and his eyes are a warm brown that sparkle when he smiles.
Personality: Anxious. Very, very anxious, all the time. Rose usually knows how to control it but sometimes it gets the better of him, even with anxiety medications. He is kind though, even when it’s hard to be, and loyal, and they’re very reliable and logical when not overwhelmed with anxious thoughts.
Backstory: Rose’s dad died in a car accident when he was very young, leaving his mother to raise him and his twin sister on her own. He sort of always knew he was transgender, but it took him until he was twelve to come out, a day he’d always remember. His mother kicked him out, but fortunately a kind stranger let him back inside the house. He knew nothing of the stranger, only that they’d done him and incredible kindness. His mother accepted his identity after that, and Rose went on to become a successful lawyer. When his sister died, he fell into a crisis and became a truck driver, wanting to just run away from it all.
Other: Rose suffers from chronic pain, but never got a diagnosis to what was wrong with him due to prejudiced doctors assuming he was making the pain up.

Honestly screw it. Here’s a short little starter to get this thing going.

Rose wasn’t really paying attention to the road. Well, he was, he just wasn’t caring that much about the road to care what was on it. All his usual podcasts had yet to update, so he was listening to the text of some boring legal case to do with… property damage? Something like that. It reminded him of his old job. Rose personally hated lawyering, he was good at making a case but rarely ever ended up showing in court either due to an abrupt change in clients for reasons his agency would never explain, or just due to scheduling errors or having to drop a case due to stress. Eventually, he just… quit. His sister had died from cancer, his mom’s mental health was worse than ever, and he was starting to realize how not-wanted he really was.

So he left.

When he saw the small child by the edge of the road, that was an issue. He pulled to a stop, and with heavy concern, asked: “Do you need a ride, kid? You look lost.”

Jax nodded, looking up at the man, shifting the small backpack that rested on her shoulders. "I'm looking for somebody," she declared, pulling a crumpled road map from the pocket of her shorts. "We were here when they took him," the girl added, pointing to a rest stop a few hours' drive away. "I'm gonna start there."

“Took who, kid?” he asked, leaning over and opening the passenger door. He had travel-sized deodorant to deliver, but he could excuse the lateness by traffic. It was especially bad in this part of town. “Come on in, you look half starved and I was planning on stopping at a Wendy’s or Burger King anyways.”
