“No apology needed.” she assured him. “I can understand getting… passionate about something you care about. And I’ll agree that the legal system has a fair few flaws.”
“No apology needed.” she assured him. “I can understand getting… passionate about something you care about. And I’ll agree that the legal system has a fair few flaws.”
"Yeah. Doesn't help that some of the judges just dislike me, because I'm aggressive and trans and they don't like that." Max wrinkled his nose a little bit, shaking his head. "So sometimes I have to excuse myself from being someone's lawyer because of that, and it's horrid."
Killian nodded faintly. He had seen the justice system and knew it had some issues to it. He'd been through it, for god's sake.
Jade’s eyes widened slightly before frowning deeply at Max's comments. “Well… That's their fault. It's unfair and I'm sorry that you go through that.” she said genuinely. “I may have just met you but you seem like a likable person. Almost like a modern-day Perry Mason.”
Max smiled a little bit. "Eh. I've gotten used to it. People are bigoted and there's nothing I can do but fight them over the legality of their bigotry. For instance, I can't take them to court over them disliking me, but I can take them to court for derogatory language. I can take them to court for denying me services or help based on my gender identity or sexuality. I can take them to court for many things, all of which are symptoms of their bigotry. I can't sue them for being bigoted, but I can sue them for the symptoms. Thanks, though."
Jade chuckled a little, nodding at his creativity in getting justice for himself and others who were affected by the same treatment. “Maybe eventually they'll get it through their thick skulls if you keep suing them for those actions.” she said a little optimisticly.
"Hmm, I doubt it. They feel they're justified, which is fair, I suppose, but that doesn't mean I'm not justified by pursuing legal action." He laughed a little bit, shrugging his shoulders. Max seemed to have a lot of energy and passion for what he did, which was probably a good thing.
"Max, don't talk their ears off with all your legal schemes!" Alex called from the kitchen. "I love you, but you'll talk them to death."
Jade laughed a little with Max, finding his humor enjoyable as well. “Don’t worry Alex. No scheming. Your husband is just sharing his passions.” she called back.
Alex laughed a little bit. "Ah, still. You can change the topic if you want, don't let him talk you to death."
“If we get bored of legal talk, we will.” she assured, smiling at Max.
Max smiled back, nodding a little. "Good, I should have warned you beforehand that I talk a lot when I really get going." he shrugged a little.
Killian laughed. "Yeah no shit, Max."
Jade chuckled with a brief shrug. “Don’t worry. I get the same way when I start talking about computers. After a while I just devolve into technobabble that I don't think anyone else understands.” she admitted.
Max nodded a little. "Yeah, we all have our obsessions, don't we." he said with a smile and a laugh.
She nodded back. “But it's fun when you can make a career out of it.” she agreed, smiling.
"Oh, definitely, definitely." he agreed, smiling a little. "I fight the bad guys in court, Alex hunts down the bad guys, everybody wins and it's great."
Killian coughed faintly, eyes flickering away for a moment. "Yeah."
Jade did her best not to react to Max’s comment about beating bad guys, considering her job as a hero and sitting next to Killian… She reached over and gave his hand a firm reassuring squeeze. “I bet that’s not always as easy as it sounds. You know, shades of gray and all.”
"True, true. And besides, I'm a defense lawyer, which means I don't actually…beat the bad guys half the time." he laughed. "Usually I'm the horrible person defending the rapist or murderer, but." he shrugged a shoulder. "Can't defend only innocent people, it doesn't pay the bills."
Killian gave Jade a faint, slanted smile, squeezing her hand back.
Jade nodded sympathetically, understanding that defense lawyers didn't always have the best clients. “Would be nice if you could though. I know that’s unrealistic but… Your clients don't make you a horrible person.” she said, smiling softly back at Killian.
"I understand that, I didn't say I was a bad person, I just meant it's hard to feel like a good person when you're defending a murderer that you know is guilty, but you've gotta defend him anyways."
“That’s fair.” she nodded, understanding that reasoning as she continued holding Killian’s hand.
Killian held her hand gently.
"Dinner's ready!" Alex called.
Jade smiled softly at Killian before turning to glance at the kitchen, her mind stuttering to think of a polite, casual way to ask how good of a cook Alex was.
Max got up, heading to the table and shedding his jacket, sitting down beside his husband, who had just come to the table with the food.
Killian leaned over to kiss her cheek. "Don't worry, Alex isn't usually a bad cook." He said softly, standing up and holding a hand out to help her up.
Jade blushed softly at the kiss, not having expected it, but smiled at Killian’s reassurance as she accepted his hand and stood up. “Thank you.” she whispered, kissing his cheek in return.
He nodded a little as he helped her up, leading her to the table and helping her sit down, before sitting beside her.
Jade smiled again at Killian as they walked towards the table together. “Such a gentleman.” she said as she took her seat, very glad when he sat next to her.
Killian smiled at her. "Of course I am."
Alex had made chicken alfredo, and served it up for them with a light smile. "Alright, let's eat."
Jade chuckled a little at Killian’s remark before turning back to Alex. “This looks really good.”
Alex smiled happily. "Thanks! It took me four tries to get it right. Not, uhm, today, but total. Max had to suffer through my experiments."
"Except for the time we just ordered takeout instead of eating that monstrosity." Max replied with a quiet laugh, taking a bite of the alfredo.
“Well, practice makes perfect.” Jade smiled before taking a bite of the pasta.
Alex nodded a little bit, eating his food. "Yes. Lots of practice."
Killian chuckled faintly, eating quietly.
