“I bet it’s partially because of school.” He stated softly, driving down the street. Glancing over to Lucas, he sighed again. “The same thing probably happens with you, doesn’t it?”
“I bet it’s partially because of school.” He stated softly, driving down the street. Glancing over to Lucas, he sighed again. “The same thing probably happens with you, doesn’t it?”
"Sometimes, yeah. I work a lot of weekends." Lucas shrugged a bit. "And a lot of afternoons… the assistant coach thing is obviously only during the kids' practice."
"Yeah, that makes sense." He nodded, before growing quiet. Eventually they pulled up to the restaurant and he sent Melissa a text; not long after, Melissa came outside, and climbed in the back seat.
"Hey, Mel… how was your shift?" Lucas asked softly, fidgeting a bit with his hands. He hoped that she wasn't still upset with him…
Melissa shrugged a little, a tired look on her face as she buckled in. "Fine, I guess." She mumbled, curling up on the back seat.
Lucas glanced over at Mr. Brennahan warily. "Anything I can do to help, darling?" He asked.
"No." Melissa responded bleakly, looking out the window. Mr. Brennahan glanced over to Lucas, a similar look on his face. "You sure, sunshine?" He asked softly, receiving the same answer in response.
Lucas sighed and nodded. "You wanna pet Cody?" He asked, offering up the gangly puppy to Melissa.
Melissa nodded as she looked up at him, reaching out to take the puppy. Pulling him closer to her chest, she gently pet the puppy. "Thanks…."
"Of course, Mel… let me know if there's anything I can do, okay?" Lucas smiled weakly over at Melissa.
Melissa nodded, forcing up a weak smile towards him. Petting Cody, she seemed to steadily relaxed.
"I love you." Lucas murmured softly, holding one hand out to Melissa in case she wanted to hold onto him.
Melissa immediately reached out to hold onto his hand, still keeping Cody close. “Love you too…” She whispered, lacing their fingers.
Lucas smiled gently and just let Melissa hold onto it, hoping it was helping her. Thankfully, they got home soon.
Reluctantly, Melissa let go of his hand as she climbed out of the car. She was still holding Cody as she crawled out, keeping pretty quiet as she waited for Lucas to get out of the car. Mr. Brennahan had shut off the car, and started up towards the front door, leaving the two teenagers at the car.
Lucas got out of the car as well and took Melissa's hand again in once he was out. "Ready to go in, darling?" He murmured.
A weak smile pulled up as she nodded, looking up towards the house. “Yeah… The lights make the house look pretty…” She stated softly, setting Cody down at her feet.
Lucas nodded a bit and led Melissa inside after gently kissing her cheek. "Almost as pretty as you."
"Lu…" Melissa mumbled, quietly following besides him. "M'not… I'm really not…"
Lucas smiled a bit to himself. "I beg to differ. What do you want for dinner?" He asked.
Her scarce smile dropped at the mention of food, words falling short. She was too tired to argue but really didn't want to eat.
Lucas sighed softly. "I know you don't want to, but it's late, Mel… and you haven't had dinner. Surely you're hungry by now?"
Melissa glanced up at him, shaking her head a little. "Not really…" She mumbled, picking at the fabric of her clothes.
"Well, could you eat a little something for me?" Lucas asked gently. "And I got a decent amount of assignments done while you were working, so I guess that's good…"
Melissa was quiet for a couple seconds, fidgeting in place. She glanced up at him as she let out a weak sigh. "Yeah, fine…" She whispered, slowly pulling away from him. "And good for you… I'm glad to hear that."
Lucas kissed Melissa's cheek and led her into the kitchen. "Thanks, Mel. What would you like me to make?"
Melissa shrugged, eyes on the floor. “I don’t really care…” She mumbled, sighing softly. “M’fine with whatever, I guess.”
Lucas nodded a bit and rooted around in the pantry. "Uhh… I can make you a sandwich?"
“That’s fine…” Melissa mumbled, sitting down at the table. “I don’t care…”
"Alrighty…" Lucas busied himself with making a sandwich for Melissa and handed it over to her when he was done.
