Jade nodded slightly, agreeing with the point and the priority.
Jade nodded slightly, agreeing with the point and the priority.
Alex smiled faintly. "It'll work out in the end, though."
Jade smiled a little at that, glad to hear a bit of optimism from Alex on the case.
Killian nodded a little. "I hope so."
“So do I.” she said softly, more addressing Killian than Alex.
Alex took off his glasses, rubbing his forehead.
“Are you alright, Alex?” Jade asked with a note of concern.
"Hm? Yes, just a little headache, nothing to worry about." he replied.
Jade smiled sympathetically. “I can understand that.” she chuckled, referring to her occasional migraines… not that Alex knew about them.
Alex nodded a little. "Yeah."
Jade glanced over at Killian for a moment, wondering how common these headaches were for Alex or if it was just an ordinary thing since she knew powered individuals weren't the only ones that got headaches or migraines.
The older man cleared his throat faintly. "Do you two want to stay for dinner? Max should be home soon."
"Oh, how is he?" Killian asked. "It's been a while since I got to speak with him last."
"He's fine. Busy with work, but he's fine." Alex smiled a little bit.
Jade felt a faint blush starting to rise at the offer as she remembered Sparky’s poor attempt of a joke. “Uh, who’s Max?” she asked, trying to refocus on the current situation.
"My husband." Alex replied, looking over at her. "I hope that's not a problem?" he raised his eyebrows faintly, unsure of Jade's standpoint on that.
“No. No problem at all.” she assured with an accepting smile. “I’m afraid Killian just hasn't told me much about his family.” she explained.
Alex nodded a little. "Ah, of course. Yeah. He's a bit secretive sometimes, isn't he?" he asked with a soft laugh.
Killian stuck his tongue out at his cousin.
Jade nodded at Alex's comment with a smirk. “Very. Getting any personal information out of him is like trying to crack a safe.” she teased, only using that analogy because it was the first normal-sounding one that came to mind.
Alex laughed again. "Oh, I can imagine." he replied, glancing over at Killian with a faint smile.
She chuckled a little. “I mean, I don't expect him to be an open book. He's allowed to keep secrets but…” she shrugged with that teasing smile.
Alex nodded slightly. "Yeah, definitely." There was a knock on the office door, and another man stuck his head in. A smile flashed onto Alex's face. "Hey, Max. How was work?"
Max returned the smile. He had a buzz cut, dark brown hair, and light stubble on his face. "Work was tiring. Hey, Killian." His eyes moved to Jade. "And?"
"This is Jade." Killian introduced.
“Nice to meet you.” Jade gave a friendly smile to Max when she was introduced.
"Nice to meet you as well. Alex, what's for dinner?" Max returned his attention to his husband, raising his eyebrows a little.
Alex sighed, standing. "I was just waiting for you to get home to finish making it, love." he looked over at Killian and Jade. "Let's head out to the living room, and you two can talk with Max or whatever while I finish making dinner."
Jade looked over at Killian, waiting to follow his lead.
Killian got up, shooting Jade a quick smile as he headed out of the room.
Jade smiled back and followed the three family members.
Max flopped down on the couch with a tired sigh, leaning back. Alex kissed his husband's forehead, then headed into the kitchen to finish making dinner.
Killian sat down, stretching. "So, Max, anything new going on with you?"
Max shrugged, rubbing his face. "Naw, but this current court case is absolute bullshit, I hate it." Max was a lawyer, and a pretty good one at that.
Jade sat down beside Killian. “What case?” she asked curiously, not knowing his career… yet.
"I'm a lawyer." Max explained. "And this judge is just– the worst, god I hate him so much." he rubbed his face with his hands. "The kid I'm defending– nice kid, he's innocent and that's the plea they entered –damn, the judge really just doesn't like them. Which, the kid is black and nonbinary, and the judge is a bigoted old asshole, and so it's just not a fun case. Can't really give any more details than that because of legalities."
Jade blinked a little as he spoke but nodded. “I can understand that. I won't ask for specifics.” she assured him. “I’m sorry that you're having trouble though.”
"Yeah. I just…god. Like I said, I'm a lawyer, defense lawyer to be exact, and I take on a lot of LGBTQ clients, and half the time the judges are just–" he blew out a breath. "I hate the legal system sometimes." then he blinked and looked over at her, and sighed. "Sorry, didn't mean to rant to you about that. I got a bit carried away."
