Lucas nodded a bit, fidgeting uneasily with his hands. "Yeah… R-Right…" He glanced around. "There's nothing we can do except hope these meds will work… there's obviously a risk with me being so young, but… you know…"
Lucas nodded a bit, fidgeting uneasily with his hands. "Yeah… R-Right…" He glanced around. "There's nothing we can do except hope these meds will work… there's obviously a risk with me being so young, but… you know…"
"It's honestly probably riskier if you don't take them…" Melissa mumbled, picking at her shirt. "I- we… we should change the topic… I think we both might be a little uneasy…"
Lucas nodded a bit. He was pale and clammy, and he seemed to be not quite there. His eyes kept shifting in and out of focus, and he felt uncomfortably hot. He kept quiet, but he clearly was struggling.
Melissa was holding onto herself, glancing over to him. "Lu…" She whispered, hesitantly reaching over to hold his hand. "Maybe… maybe we should go sit down in the other room…"
Lucas nodded weakly, Melissa's voice muffled from his blood pounding in his ringing ears. "Y-Yeah… sure, Mel…"
Melissa stood up, quietly leading him over to the couch. Hesitating before doing so, she pulled the blanket off the back of the couch, gesturing for him to lay down.
Lucas curled up into a tight ball on the couch and drew in a labored, wavering breath. He was quivering lightly and seemed to be trying to calm down, but he was very tense.
Melissa sat on the floor, trying to give him a little bit of space. She curled back up on herself, rubbing his back with one of her hands. "Let me know if I can help…"
"Mm…" Lucas closed his eyes, kneading the blanket a bit with his hands as he tried to ease his tension. "M'sorry…"
"It's not your fault, Lu… I'm the one who kept running my mouth. I'm the one who knew this would happen, but kept talking…" Melissa whispered, still rubbing his back. "Just… just relax. Don't apologize."
"Okay, okay… okay… m'trying…" Lucas paled a bit more, curling up more tightly where he was laying.
"Hey, I know…" Melissa cringed, mentally slapping herself. "I- I didn't mean it like that, I just… take a deep breath." She mumbled, starting to get frustrated at how bad she was doing to comfort him.
Lucas drew in a wavering breath and nodded weakly, keeping his eyes closed for now. "I-I shouldn't be so s-sensitive, Mel…"
"It's not your fault Lu…" Melissa whispered again, pulling away from him. She was worried she was only going to make things worse.
"Maybe the… maybe the meds will kick in soon… and I'll just be fine. I'll be a normal person. Less… less weak…"
"Lucas… you shouldn't be thinking like that, it's not good for you…" Melissa whispered still. She held onto herself as she looked over to him. "You're only going to frustrate yourself."
"I just wanna be normal, Mel…" Lucas whispered. "Why's it so hard to just function normally?"
Melissa was holding onto herself tighter, trying to remember what he had told her earlier. Hadn't he just answered that question for her? "I- you've gone through a lot, Lu… a lot of terrible things. I- I wish I could just fix everything wrong in your life, but… but I can't. But… I- um…" She trailed off, really struggling to give him a good response.
"I'm just being so stupid…" Lucas seemed to hardly be able to hear Melissa anymore. "I'm almost an adult, and just look at me… I'm so pathetic, Mel… why do you even love me?"
"B-Because… I- um…" Melissa looked up at him, heart sinking as he kept talking. She was really stressing out over trying to answer him, not really realizing he wasn't paying much attention. "I- I think you're great… and- and um… you…"
Lucas bit down hard on his wrist to keep himself quiet, trying to stifle his crying. Thankfully, he didn't break the skin, but he left marks nonetheless.
Melissa was mumbling trying to word her thoughts. She looked up at him, trying to relax. "L-Lu… I- I really love you…" She mumbled, holding onto herself tighter.
Lucas whimpered quietly and bit down harder on his arm, trying to stop himself from crying.
Melissa hesitantly reached out, trying to rub his back to soothe him. "I- I'm sorry I'm not helping you more- I dunno what I can do…"
"I'm sorry…" Lucas whispered, gripping the blanket more tightly. Cody jumped up onto the couch and curled up with him to try and calm him down.
Melissa picked at her jeans, looking over to him. Instead of responding, she continued to rub his back in silence.
Lucas stayed curled up for a while longer than usual. It took him about an hour to even begin relaxing. Thankfully, his meds eventually began taking their effect, and he seemed to breathe a bit more easy.
Melissa didn't bother talking to him, staying curled in on herself. She looked up at him, waiting for him to relax. The whole time she kept to herself trying not to start crying for whatever reason.
"I'm sorry, Mel…" Lucas whispered weakly, his voice cracked from crying. "I'm so sorry…"
Melissa hesitated before speaking, holding onto him tightly. "It's okay… please, don't beat yourself up over it…"
