Melissa studied his features in silence for a couple seconds, slowly speaking up. "What about..?
"That you have to deal with me. I'm almost an adult and I can't even handle this by myself… I'm just a mess…"
"Hey, hush. You know why you're like this, and you're on the road to repair… have you taken your meds today?" Melissa asked abruptly, looking down at him.
"I… I don't remember…" Lucas fidgeted nervously. "I-I might've forgotten, I dunno… would explain it I guess…"
"It would explain a lot. But I don't think you're suppose to take them twice," Melissa sighed softly, glancing down at him. "So I really need you to try and focus and remember if you did. I wouldn't ask you if it wasn't important, can you please try, though?"
"I-I don't know, Mel… I… I just…" Lucas clung tighter to Melissa, quivering a bit. "I'm sorry, I-I… I don't think so? I can't… I'm sorry…"
"Hey, hey it's okay… it's okay…" Melissa whispered, pressing her lips to the top of his head. Lingering for a minute or so, she eventually pulled away and looked down at him. "It's alright, love… you're gonna be alright. Shh…"
Lucas sighed shakily, just allowing Melissa to hold him, still seeming stressed. "S-Stupid meds… why can't I just be functional without them…?"
Melissa weakly pet him, trying to calm him down a little more before offering to go get them for him. "I dunno, love…" She whispered, kissing him a couple times.
"I'm sorry, Mel… I-I'm so sorry…" Lucas tucked his head under Melissa's chin and gripped her shirt tightly, still shaking.
"It's okay…" Melissa continued to whisper, resting her head against his. "I love you. I'm not upset with you."
"I… I think I forgot the meds, Mel…" Lucas whispered weakly. "I-I think that I forgot them…"
"It's okay… I can go get them for you in just a minute…" Melissa whispered in response, holding him close. "You need just a minute, though… I don't wanna leave you."
"Cody can get them for me, just… y-you can tell him… you know the… the words…" Lucas stammered nervously.
Melissa sighed softly, sitting up just a little. "Cody," She called before directing him to get the meds. When Cody brought them back, Melissa laid back down with him. "Can I get you water?"
"Mm…" Lucas curled in on himself a bit after he accepted his pill bottle from Cody, still seeming cry uneasy.
Melissa sighed weakly, kissing his forehead. "I'll be right back, okay? You stay right here." She whispered before getting up out of the fort. She quickly got a glass of water, coming back to him.
Lucas swallowed his pills as soon as Melissa returned with the water and then curled up with her again, still trembling a bit.
Melissa pulled his head close to her chest, running her fingers through his hair. She gently kissed him a couple times, wrapping her legs around him. "You're okay… you're gonna be fine, I promise…"
Lucas whimpered softly and clung to Melissa, waiting for his meds to kick in. "I-I'm sorry…" He whispered.
"You don't have to say anything, Lu…" Melissa whispered as well, pulling him even closer. "I love you… you don't have to be sorry."
Lucas nodded weakly and just allowed Melissa to hold him. "Mmmm…"
Melissa was quiet for a long time, letting him settle into her arms. She continually ran her fingers through his hair, and rubbed circles into his back. Besides the tender actions, she didn't do or say much.
It took Lucas a long time, but he eventually seemed to relax a bit. "Mmm… I'm sorry, Mel… so sorry…" He whispered.
"It's okay…" Melissa whispered, slowly loosening her hold on him. She pulled back just a little to kiss his lips. "You think you can try and nap now? I'm sure you've gotta be pretty drained…"
"I-I can try, yeah…" Lucas closed his eyes and huddled closer to Melissa, trying to get himself to relax enough to sleep.
Melissa sighed softly, keeping a loose hold on him. She continued to card her fingers through his hair, singing quietly under her breath.
Eventually, Lucas managed to drift off into a light sleep in Melissa's arms, finally actually relaxing.
When Melissa was sure he was actually asleep, she quietly made her way into the kitchen. Attempting to fulfill her promise, she started on a batch of cookies, and they were in the oven not long after. While she was waiting for either Lucas or the cookies, she pulled his stack of homework over to herself, attempting to organize all of it.
Lucas stirred uneasily in his sleep, so Cody came into the blanket fort to lay down with him in an attempt to calm him, which worked to some extent.
