"But… you can't always make things better by just… willing them to be okay." Melissa insisted, burying her face further into his shoulder. "It's…. it can't just be that easy."
"But… you can't always make things better by just… willing them to be okay." Melissa insisted, burying her face further into his shoulder. "It's…. it can't just be that easy."
"No, it's not, but it can help things to not seem so bleak all the time. Very rarely are things truly hopeless."
Melissa just breathed softly, letting those words sink in. Slowly she pulled back, looking up at him. "How… how can you say that, after everything you went through?"
Lucas smiled weakly. "How do you think I got through it? If I was hopeless, I wouldn't be with you here right now."
Melissa studied his face when he smiled, listening to him intently. She sighed softly, burying her face back in his chest. "I- I guess you're right…"
"Mhmm… I never would've gotten out of there if I was constantly trying to convince myself that I couldn't."
"I- I guess so…" Melissa whispered, keeping huddled up against him. "It's… is it hard?"
Lucas shrugged again. "It can be, but you can control your thoughts to some extent. Just gotta tell yourself over and over that it's all gonna be okay…"
Melissa listened to his beating heart, letting everything sink in still. "I- why is it so hard, though? Why… why does my mind try to tell me it's not okay?"
"Well… to some extent, maybe that's what you want to hear. You just want to let it be bad because making it good is hard."
Melissa didn’t respond, thinking about it a little harder. Maybe he was right? Maybe that really was just what she wanted to hear…
Lucas sighed and pulled Melissa closer. "I know what it's like, Mel, but you can't get better if you're insistent on not changing your unhealthy ways."
Melissa let out a shaky breath, burying her face in his chest. "I- I'm sorry… I- I know I need to get over myself…" She whispered, holding onto the fabric of his shirt.
"Don't worry about it, Mel. I know it's hard." Lucas kissed Melissa softly and sighed.
Melissa forced herself to relax, loosening her hold on him. Quietly she pulled back, looking up at him. "I- um… sorry…"
"Don't be, darling. I'm not mad at you. I love you, okay?" Lucas smiled weakly.
Melissa looked up at him, eyes flicking up and down his face to study his expression. Sighing softly, she gave a weak smile in return. "I love you, too… thank you for being here…"
"Of course, darling… I'm happy to be here." Lucas gently kissed Melissa again and held her tightly.
Melissa kissed him in return, burying her face in his shoulder. "Still, I don't know what I'd do without you." She whispered, leaning into his arms.
"I dunno what I'd do without you either, Mel…" Lucas nuzzled against Melissa's head a bit.
"I love you…" Melissa whispered, smiling softly when he nuzzled against her. "I- you're great."
"Love you too, Mel…" Lucas smiled gently as well. "So much. How are you feeling?" He asked.
"Fine, I guess… not great, but good enough." Melissa hummed softly, pulling back some to look at him.
Lucas nodded a bit. "That's good, I guess… anything I can do to make it better?" He asked.
Melissa shrugged, keeping her arms around him. "Not really… maybe change the topic? I dunno…" She mumbled, sighing softly.
"Sure, Mel… how do you feel… about… cats?" Lucas asked curiously.
Melissa gave him a strange look, laughing a little. "I guess I like them. I don't have any really strong opinions, besides maybe liking orange ones the most." She hummed softly, resting her head on his shoulder.
Lucas laughed softly and nodded. "I think they're neat… I'm not sure that Cody would like one around, though."
"Mm, probably not." Melissa hummed softly, kissing his cheek. "I mean, I think Laura might have a cat. Maybe we could see what he thinks about it."
"Mm. Maybe… he's a good boy, so maybe he wouldn't try and chase it." He happily returned the kiss.
