Melissa hummed softly, running her fingers through his hair as she opened the book. “Love you…” She hummed, kissing him in return before starting to read the words.

"Love you too, Mel…" Lucas closed his eyes and relaxed, humming softly to himself while Melissa read.

Melissa continued to play with his hair, occasionally stopping to turn the page. But besides that she didn’t exactly acknowledge him.

Lucas didn't acknowledge Melissa much either, although he obviously liked the petting.

Melissa read for a long time, content to sit there with him. When a little over an hour had passed, she replaced the bookmark, and set the book on the coffee table. "You still awake?"

"Mhmm…" Lucas yawned a bit and nuzzled against Melissa. "How's the book?" He asked.

Melissa smiled softly, kissing his cheek. "It's good, and I've practically already finished it." She hummed softly, scooting down to lay next to him.

"Nice, Mel… I should've done some more reading while I was in the hospital. Who knows if I even still know how?"

"Lucas, I'm sure you can read." Melissa rolled her eyes a little, snuggling up close. "How else would you have been able to read the letters I gave you?"

"Ah, true." Lucas kissed Melissa softly. "I suppose I probably remember how to read, then."

Melissa snickered, burying her face in his shoulder. "But you probably could have, or should have read some while you were there. I wish you would have said something sooner, I've got tons of books I could have brought you."

"Yeah… I had drawing to keep me occupied. I was still petty bored a lot of the time, though." He shrugged a bit.

"Man, I wish I had thought of it… maybe it wouldn't have been so bad…" Melissa sighed weakly, resting her chin on his shoulder.

"Eh, it's not your fault… it would've been bad either way." Lucas laughed weakly.

Melissa sighed softly, kissing his shoulder. "I know… but at least you wouldn't have been bored."

"I'd still have been pretty bored, Mel. I can't read and draw all day. Days are real long there."

"I know, I know…." Melissa whispered, still nuzzling against him affectionately. "I'm sorry… I- I wish you didn't have to go there."

Lucas shrugged a bit. "It's not your fault, Mel… it's my own for letting it get that bad."

Melissa kept her face hidden in his shoulder as she let out a weak sigh. "I should have been able to realize something was wrong, though… I- I should have tried harder to help you…"

"And I should've told you something was going on instead of trying to hide it for years, Mel."

"Yeah- but…" Melissa grew quiet, unable to come up with an argument. She stayed there, not having anything else to say.

Lucas huddled a bit closer to Melissa. "It's not your fault, okay? You don't have to blame yourself."

Melissa sighed softly as she buried her face in his shoulder. "I- I really wish I could have helped you, though." She whispered, holding on tightly to him.

"And I wish I'd told you sooner, but wishing for something in the past won't get us anywhere."

Melissa grew quiet again, taking a couple minutes to respond. "Wishing at all is futile, isn't it?" She asked softly, keeping her chin on his shoulder.

"Sometimes, yeah…" Lucas sighed softly. "Sometimes it's good to have some hope, though."

"But how are you suppose to have hope, if you know the situation is inevitable?" Melissa asked still, holding on tightly. "I- I mean, what if the situation is so hopeless, and… and you know only bad things are going to come from it? How… how are you suppose to be hopeful?"

Lucas shrugged a bit. "Well, you just hope that there's hope. You can't always be so pessimistic."

"But how are you suppose to be optimistic? You… you're just going to be disappointed…" Melissa whispered.

"Maybe so, but things will always be bad if you go into them expecting them to be. You have to try and make the best of your situation if you can."
