"Lucas, please…" Melissa was practically begging him, running her thumbs over his cheeks. "Just five minutes… five minutes where you don't think about it. Five minutes to recharge."
"Lucas, please…" Melissa was practically begging him, running her thumbs over his cheeks. "Just five minutes… five minutes where you don't think about it. Five minutes to recharge."
Lucas sighed shakily and buried his face in Melissa's shoulder. "Mel… p-please… I can't…"
Melissa jumped a little when he buried his face in her shoulder. She let out a weak sigh, resting her head against him. "Babe…" She sighed weakly.
"Mm…" Lucas closed his eyes and tried to relax, gripping a bit tighter to Melissa. He wasn't much in the mood for talking anymore.
Melissa was rubbing circles into his back as she sighed softly. "You know I'm telling you this because I care about you, right?" She asked softly, resting her chin on his shoulder.
Lucas nodded weakly. "I-I know… and… and I'd do the same for you, b-but it's just really hard to let myself stop…"
"I know honey…" Melissa whispered, kissing the top of his head gently. "I love you so much, and I'm so sorry…"
"I love you too, Mel… I'm sorry for being a problem…" Lucas whispered weakly. "I'm sorry…"
“You’re not a problem babe…” Melissa whispered, gently running her fingers through his hair. “Don’t think like that.”
"I am a problem… I can't even do homework without freaking out and being stupid…" Lucas sighed shakily.
"It is a problem, but you're not the problem." Melissa whispered, kissing the top of his head. "Not you as a person, or um… y'know." She trailed, not really sure what she was trying to say.
"Mm…" Lucas buried his face further into Melissa's shoulder. "I should be able to handle this… it's just some homework…"
"Not just some, it's a lot. It's okay to be stressed out by it…" Melissa whispered, stroking his back with a soft sigh.
Lucas held a bit tighter to Melissa. "I just feel so stupid… I feel like I should be doing better, but I can't…"
"Honey please, it's not your fault… you're doing fantastic for not having even gotten the education to go with it." Melissa whispered, letting him hold on to her.
"Maybe so, but I just… I don't feel like I am…" Lucas sighed shakily. "It's not a great feeling…"
Melissa sighed weakly, playing with his hair gently. "I bet… is there anything I can do to make it better?" She asked softly.
Lucas shrugged a bit. "I dunno… I'm probably just being irrational or something… being stupid…"
"You're not stupid, honey…" Melissa hummed softly, kissing the top of his head. "I love you a lot…"
"You shouldn't…" Lucas sighed. "But I'm glad you do… I love you too, Mel… so much…"
"But I do. I love you so very much. If anything, you shouldn't love me…" Melissa whispered, kissing his temple a couple times.
"But you deserve it, Mel… I don't…" Lucas buried his face in Melissa's shoulder again. "I'm sorry…"
"Why do I deserve it anymore than you do?" Melissa asked softly, nuzzling against his cheek. "You're wonderful, love."
"Because you're a good person, Mel… I'm not… I don't deserve you, or how well you treat me, or… or anything…"
“That’s not true, Lucas. You’re such a kindhearted guy, and you’re overall wonderful.” Melissa whispered as she rubbed his back. “Babe, you do so many wonderful things, even if you don’t think so.”
"I don't feel wonderful, though… w-why would he have… if I didn't deserve it…" Lucas coughed a bit, his breath catching in his throat.
“Some people are cruel. There’s not much we can do about those people besides do our best to get by.” Melissa whispered, rubbing circles into his back. “There’s people who love you, and want you to live a good life. It doesn’t make up for the bad you’ve faced, there’s no downplaying how awful he was to you. But we’re past that how. He’s not here to hurt you anymore.”
"It feels like you're really the only one who cares about me, though…" Lucas sighed shakily and huddled closer to Melissa. "And he… I'll have to see him again sometime. He won't be in prison forever, a-and what if he comes looking for me?"
“It’s not just me, darling. The kids you work with adore you, your teammates really care about you, my own father really loves and cares for you.” Melissa whispered, playing with his hair still. “And yeah, sure, one day you will have to. But if he tries anything, he’ll probably be sent straight back.”
"Mm…" Lucas buried his face further into Melissa's shoulder. "I need to visit my dad… I've been putting it off because I really don't wanna see him again, but I know I'll feel horrible if I never go…"
