She sat up a little when she felt him shift to get his phone. Honestly, she was considering if she should leave him to have some privacy for his call.
There was the low sound of a man's voice, and he frowned, standing to go to the window. "No– Alex, slow down, and repeat what you just said."
At that Jade stood up and quietly made her way to the kitchen. It sounded like a personal situation, though potentially serious… She could try asking afterwards. Though she knew Killian wasn’t always forthcoming with personal information.
Killian kept talking on the phone in a low tone, a frown pulling at his features.
Jade would occasionally glance back to check on him from the kitchen as she found little things to do to keep herself occupied, but refused to interrupt his call.
Killian leaned against the wall, dragging a hand through his hair as he spoke. "Yeah, I see."
Jade sighed softly, trying not to worry too much… though her mind was already starting to come up with scenarios.
Killian hung up on the phone, letting out a slow breath.
Jade slowly stepped out the kitchen. “Is something wrong?” she asked gently.
He looked over at her, thinking. "I…yeah."
“What is it?” she asked again, taking a few more careful steps towards him.
"That was my cousin, on the phone. He said, uhm…" he trailed off, shaking his head and frowning a little.
She nodded a little, encouraging him to go on. “Is your cousin in trouble?”
"He's a private investigator." he said. "He's been working on…on mom's case, and…" he shook his head again, not quite looking at Jade.
Her eyes widened slightly at the news but nodded again. “He found something?” It was hard to keep the note of excitement completely out of her voice… Though she tried to prepare herself for bad news as well.
"Yeah." he said quietly, dragging his hands through his hair.
She gently placed a hand against his arm. “What did he find?” she asked, matching his tone and volume.
"I– he thinks they might have– an area for the…the body, but…"
Her eyes widened again at the news… Or at least this part of the news. “Oh, Killian. I’m so sorry.” she said sincerely, though she did want to hear the rest of what he heard.
"He's not sure, and…it's a massive area, too big for…for cadaver dogs." he shook his head a little, covering his face with a hand and letting out a shaky head.
She nodded gently and attempted to give him a comforting hug when she failed to come up with something to say in response.
He leaned against her, shaking his head faintly.
“Is there anything I can do to help?” she whispered softly.
"I…I don't know." he said quietly, wrapping his arms around her and holding her close.
She nodded, accepting his answer and holding him close. Honestly, she already had a couple ideas on how she could help… but now was not the time to bring them up.
He was still a bit in shock. It had been years since his mother disappeared, and the idea that he might finally know for sure what happened…it was overwhelming.
Jade couldn't pretend to understand what he might be going through. She’d heard of and probably read of cold cases getting solved and how the family reacted… She was more than willing to do what she could for him though.
He let out a shaky breath, closing his eyes and holding onto her.
She hugged him closer and rubbed his back in comforting motions.
He kept his eyes closed, not speaking.
