Melissa continued to play quietly, glancing over to him. “You don’t sound alright. What’s wrong?” She asked softly, eyes glued to the keys.
Melissa continued to play quietly, glancing over to him. “You don’t sound alright. What’s wrong?” She asked softly, eyes glued to the keys.
"N-Nothing, really, I just… when I was talking with your dad, I mentioned my little incident earlier as well since I figured he'd want to know, and… we talked about it. I'm fine, though…"
Melissa nodded a little, glancing over to him quickly. “If you say so.” She mumbled in response, resting her hands in her lap when she finished the song.
Lucas nodded and rested his head on Melissa's shoulder with a soft sigh. "We're going to try and get you a therapist you're more comfortable with…"
Melissa barely nodded, eyes glued to the sheet music in front of her. “Right…” She whispered in response, trying to let him know she was listening.
"And… and we're gonna try to make sure you're eating enough, okay? To… uhm… to keep you safe…"
Melissa nodded again, not saying anything else. She stayed quiet, eyes glued to the music sheets.
Lucas kissed Melissa's cheek softly and buried his face in her shoulder. "Y-You're not mad at me, are you…?" He asked nervously.
Melissa glanced down at him, slowly shaking her head. "No, I'm not mad…" She whispered, going back to her odd silence.
"Are you sure? I don't want you to be upset with me or anything… but I guess I can't exactly be surprised if you are…"
"I'm fine." Melissa whispered, keeping her eyes trained on her hands as she fidgeted with them. "I just… I don't want to talk about it."
"Okay…" Lucas fell silent and just huddled up against Melissa, trying to comfort the both of them.
Melissa hesitated before resting her head on his shoulder. "We… we can sit on the couch, if it makes you more comfortable."
"I'm happy to go wherever you're happiest, darling… I wanna make sure you're okay…" Lucas replied softly.
"I honestly don't know where I'm happiest… I don't know if I'm okay… I just don't know." Melissa whispered weakly, tears stinging at her eyes. "And I really don't know what's wrong with me."
"Uhm… well, I'm pretty sure I know, but I'm not sure whether or not that was like… rhetorical? And I don't wanna bother you…"
“I-I…” Melissa stammered, looking down at him. “I- I don’t… I don’t know. I- what’s wrong with me?” She asked weakly, burying her face in her hands.
"W-Well, I think that you're struggling with anorexia right now, love… you… you're so concerned about your weight that you're trying to starve yourself to lose it. It's not a healthy mindset."
Melissa dropped her hands, tears still running down her face as she looked down at him. "I- I hate this… why am I broken? I-I don't understand…" She continued to mumbled, wrapping her arms around herself.
"You're not broken beyond repair, darling… we can fix this, okay? You're gonna get better. I'll make sure of it."
"H-How can you be sure? W-What if I'm so damaged, that they can't fix me." Melissa whispered weakly, pulling her legs up to her chest.
"They can, Melissa. We can. Millions of people have had anorexia and a lot of them can get past it."
“B-But that doesn’t mean all of them do… what if I’m one of those people? What if I don’t?” Melissa insisted.
"You're gonna be fine, Mel…" Lucas sighed. "It shouldn't be too hard to get you back on the right track."
Melissa grew quiet, hiding her face from him. Her body trembled as she kept quiet, trying not to start crying again.
Lucas kept quiet as well, holding Melissa close to himself. He tried his best to comfort her.
Melissa hesitated before speaking, her voice barely above a whisper. "I-Is this how you feel..?"
"What do you mean, Mel?" Lucas replied just as softly.
"So hopeless… and empty… and- and like you're so broken that nothing can fix you..?" Melissa asked weakly, looking over to him.
"Well, yeah… but… they fixed me. Somewhat, anyway. It'll be a while until I'm fully better, but… it'll happen."
