I'm all for characters with mental illness. I'm all for plot points built around that mental illness. I'm all for fiction books devoted to explore mental illness.
I'm not for mental illness being used in- to capsulate- stupid, romantic, misinforming, or edgy ways. That's not how we do this, people.

D: I didn't see it but I'm glad we're united in our hatred for that bullshit book Not to mention that it's literally just The Fault In Our Stars but with mental illness and not cancer-
ya writers love to pick the most pretty and easy symptoms of mental illness and then further make them less than they are
Mmmhmm
It kinda ties into this other YA thing that I see a lot, where people like the idea of morally grey characters but then get mad when the lead in a book does something questionable. Like, what were you expecting? The assassin to sit around wearing frilly dresses and eating candy instead of plucking a man's eye out?
#nobodysaidkazbrekkerwasn'tabadperson
Exactly! The point of the Crows is that they're bad people, and yet people complain about Kaz…being a bad person? What did you expect??
he's part of a gang, janice. they're not supposed to be incredible people.
also on that topic one of my favorite depictions of the actual shit that goes on in gangs and organized crime syndicates is sons of anarchy. like they seriously got it spot on. part of that is due to the writer of the show doing his homework and becoming friends with the founder/leader of the hell's angels and spending like a year with that to learn about what it was like. is it disturbing, messed up and horrid? yeah but that's kinda expected form criminals lmao
Oo I'm also all for mental illness being expressed in poetic ways. That's what art is for. But there's a line between romantisizing and taking mental illness to weird, unhealthy places and actually looking at it from a deep, creative perspective. Case in point-

okay listen the scariest fucking part about that movie was that i literally lived that. i was stuck in that main girl's position and that is terrifying to look back on

I am attempting to fulfil those check marks with one of my projects, so hopefully I don't disappoint once the time comes
Didn’t think I had to say this but DON’T STEAL. You steal without hunger you’re a filthy maggot.
hsdhdhj i'm morally and physically incapable of stealing bcs my mom was a retail worker and i'd feel so bad imagining the repercussions on someone who just really wants to get through a day of hell

my opinions on stealing appear to be different than those of the general public

Never watched the movie but I read the book and loathed it
The worst part for me was how they romanticized not getting help and how that literally led to the guy killing himself but it was never really commented on by the book? Also turning his suicide into a fucking scavenger hunt to help Violet "see the world" or whatever is repulsive, I can't believe that was in a published book.

It depends on your reasoning
and unfortunately domino, that isn't how opinions work
@gothleo
I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry, but I can't do this anymore. I don't know how to say what I need to, but I can't do this. Not anymore. I feel like I'm on eggshells when we interact and I know that's all in my head but I can't do it anymore, I just can't. I loved you, I really did, but I've changed, and I can't be the person I was when we were close. I'm sorry. I have to cut these ties.
^This is unrelated to recent stuff, it's just been bogging me down for months.

Perhaps.
Yes. If you have no way to afford food, for example, sometimes you have to steal. And that's alright. Even though it should never have to come to that, sometimes it does.

I ranted at my dad about how much I hated Allegiant for a solid half hour while on our walk tonight, and that feels relevant to this chat due to our….feelings on Divergent.

Me: And she just kills off all the interesting characters from the first two books, like she knew the deaths in Mockingjay had impact but didn't know why!

Stay gold, Leo.
I always do.
Good. I want you to live a happy and prosperous life, even if I'm not really in it.

tris? again i'll say it her concept was gold even if it was a bit cliche bcs it could have been written very well, especially with heavy focus on wondering if her choice was simply a moment of teenage rebellion or something deeper, showing more of her missing her family and resenting them for trapping her as a kid or thanking them for raising her to think she could make that decision
but alas. roth didn't get that. same as she didn't get character death

Tris, but also the side characters. You don't get to connect to any since Roth introduces them and kills them super quickly after.
I genuinely hate how the mom was retconned to be a plant, because the scene where she's revealed to be not only originally Dauntless, but Divergent? Gold. The best moment in the first book, imo. And then it's ruined by a lazy retcon along with all of the admittedly lackluster worldbuilding I've only read 2 YA books that have pulled off killing the lead, and those are
Spoiler - click to show.
Our Dark Duet by Victoria Schwab and The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis
Honestly Divergent also could've been a great allegory for neurotypical vs neurodivergent brains but alas.
Y'know, the more I think about the ending for All The Bright Places, the more pissed off I get.
They used his death as a scavenger hunt. The lead killed himself and left a path to the location as a scavenger hunt for his depressed girlfriend to follow. In what world is that okay? How did that get through editing???
