"Of course, Lucas. I'll be right back." Mr. Brennahan nodded a little, starting out into the kitchen. When he had left the room, Cody came around the couch peering up at Lucas with a little whimper.
"Of course, Lucas. I'll be right back." Mr. Brennahan nodded a little, starting out into the kitchen. When he had left the room, Cody came around the couch peering up at Lucas with a little whimper.
Lucas picked up Cody and held him close to himself, burying his face in the puppy's fur with a shaky sigh. His breathing was still a tad raspy, but he seemed to be doing somewhat better.
It didn't take very long for Mr. Brennahan to come back with a glass of water. When he saw Lucas with Cody, he felt a little smile pull up. "I've got your water." He told him softly, coming up to Lucas.
Lucas looked up when he heard Mr. Brennahan's voice. "Thank you, sir…" He accepted the glass from Mr. Brennahan and started sipping it quietly.
Smiling softly, Mr. Brennahan came and sat down next to him on the couch. "Of course… anything you need, I'm happy to get you." He insisted in a soft tone, giving Lucas some space.
Lucas nodded a bit, still drinking his water. "Thank you…" Cody huddled up in his lap, trying to comfort him. "I'm sorry for causing all this mess…"
"It's nothing I can't handle. You don't need to worry about it." Mr. Brennahan smiled softly, continually glancing over to Lucas. After a minute or so of silence, he slowly tried to start talking to him again. "Can… can I ask you something?"
"Um… yeah, sure. What do you need, sir?" Lucas asked nervously, looking back up at Mr. Brennahan. He pet Cody with his free hand.
"You don't have to answer this, I just… I dunno. Why are you so against me offering you help?" Mr. Brennahan asked softly, looking over to Lucas. "If you don't want to answer, that's fine."
Lucas fidgeted nervously. "I-I… um… I dunno, really. I just… it's really hard for me to let people give me things. I don't… feel… like I deserve it…" He said slowly. "And it's just so much money, I… I-I couldn't possibly…"
"I know it's a lot of money, Lucas. But I really want to be able to help. Could I at least help cover some of the expense?" Mr. Brennahan asked softly, not going to push it any further if he really didn't want him to. "I really want you to be happy, in all honesty."
"I-I know you do, but I really don't want to inconvenience you guys with my problems… y-you're good people and all I've done since I've gotten here was cause problems…" Lucas drew in a wavering breath, struggling to hold back tears.
Mr. Brennahan waited a minute, trying to let him gather himself. He didn't have a problem with him crying, but he doubted Lucas would want to, in front of him. "Lucas, you're not inconveniencing us. I promise you, me and Melissa are both happy to help you."
"B-But I just… that's so much money, and… and you guys need that to survive, don't you? We never had much money… I-I mean, I barely had enough money to eat once a day back at my house and it was only my dad and I. We've got five people here…"
Mr. Brennahan sighed softly, dropping his chin in his palm. "It is a lot of money, and yeah, we've got a lot more people living here, but me and Melissa's mother both have jobs. We both have pretty well-paying jobs, to be more specific. We're not rich, or anything, but we've got a decent amount of money in the bank."
"But how am I supposed to repay you? I-I know I have a job and all, but I don't get paid all that much and my hours are limited because I'm a minor and school and stuff…" Lucas sighed shakily. "I just… I feel so bad that I keep taking things from you guys…"
"Repay me?" Mr. Brennahan asked softly, giving him a slightly amused look. "Seeing you happy, and you loving my daughter is all I need. You're still a kid, Lucas. You wouldn't owe me a thing."
"You… you don't want me to repay you?" Lucas asked weakly. "But… this isn't just some small favor, sir… we're talking hundreds of dollars worth of therapy. Probably more. I can't… I can't just let you do that without doing anything in return."
"Lucas, you can't seriously expect me to want you to repay me. If we were doing that, you'd be in debt with me for who knows how long. You're my daughter's boyfriend. I'd feel god-awful knowing that. And again, you're still technically a kid. You're not even eighteen yet." Mr. Brennahan insisted, giving him a soft look. "I would never tell you that you'd have to repay me. But because I know what kind of person you are, I won't refuse repayment in the future. Besides, with you working, and Melissa looking for a job, we can put that together. I'm willing to fill in whatever is left."
Lucas drew in a sharp breath and rubbed at his teary eyes. "I-I… um… I don't know what to say…" He murmured weakly. "Thank you so much, sir… I promise I'll try my best to repay you as soon as I have the money."
"I'm not rushing you, Lucas. I don't want you to stress yourself out over this." Mr. Brennahan insisted is a soft tone, scooting closer to Lucas with a little smile. Carefully he wrapped an arm around his shoulders in a half-hug, before standing. "Take all the time you need."
"Y-Yes, sir." Lucas held Cody close to himself, still trembling lightly. He soon lay back on the couch, waiting for Melissa to come back down.
After a little while, Melissa came down the stairs silently, peering into the kitchen. "Lucas?" She glanced around the kitchen, and living room, looking rather confused. "Are you still here?"
"Y-Yeah, I'm in the living room…" Lucas called back quietly. He was curled up on his side by now, holding Cody flush up against himself.
Melissa turned on her heel, approaching the couch at the sound of his voice. "Hey, sorry I took so long. I was…" She trailed off, her thoughts catching up to her. The way he was laying on the couch, and the tone of his voice when he responded to her sent off major red flags. "Lu, are you alright?"
"I'm okay, I just… um… I had a conversation with your dad…" He replied softly. "He… he wanted to talk about last night. He wants me to go to therapy…"
"That doesn't surprise me in the slightest… did he say anything about the- um… mental hospital?" Melissa asked softly, coming and sitting on the edge of the couch.
Lucas shook his head. "Not much, no… we kinda glazed over it, to be honest. I just… it makes me really nervous thinking about it… he doesn't want me to repay him…"
"Wait- what? Repay? What on earth are you talking about?" Melissa asked, her confusion growing. "You're not honestly telling me he wants to pay, are you?"
"Y-Yeah, like I said, he wants me to go to therapy… I thought he was insane. I mean, that's hundreds of dollars, probably more, and he just…" Lucas sighed shakily. "I feel horrible about it. I'll have to find a way to pay him back once I've got the money…"
