Lucas flushed a bit harder, still grinning as he nodded. "I mean, who wouldn't be excited about puppies?" A few seconds after Mr. Brennahan ring the bell, a friendly looking middle aged woman came to the door. "Oh! You must be Lucas. Come in, come in!"
Melissa smiled softly to the woman, giving Lucas's hand a gentle squeeze as they walked inside. "I'm Henry Brennahan, nice to meet you." Mr. Brennahan greeted, holding his hand out to the woman with a smile.
She shook his hand, smiling brightly. "I'm Jennifer Goldman. It's wonderful to meet you as well." She led the three of them into a room where six puppies were tumbling about within a large pen. The mother was laying on the side, quietly watching them play. Lucas tightened his grip on Melissa's hand for a second, brightening when he saw the puppies. "You can go on in with them and pick out whichever one you'd like." The woman said, still smiling. Lucas nodded and stepped over the gate, staying where he stood for a couple seconds to help Melissa over as well.
"They're so cute," Melissa noted as she knelt down on the floor, next to spot Lucas was standing. "When were they born?" She asked softly, glancing over her should at Ms. Goldman. She was still smiling, glancing over when she heard soft footsteps approaching her.
"Just about eight weeks ago today." She smiled gently, scratching the head of a puppy that hopped over to her. Lucas sat down beside Melissa and whistled quietly, catching the attention of one of the puppies. It ran over to him and flopped down in his lap, whining happily. Lucas grinned and scratched behind its ears.
"So they're not even three months old?" Melissa hummed lightly, reaching over to pet the top of the puppy's back. "They're so playful for being so little." She added in a soft tone. Glancing up at Lucas's face, Melissa felt her smile creep up a little more at seeing his face.
"Mhmm. They've got a lot of energy. Their mom is getting sick of them." She laughed a bit, looking over at the tired mother. "They tucker her out." Lucas lay back on the floor so the puppy could flop on his chest. It licked his cheeks, its tail wagging with excitement. A few other puppies came over to check Lucas out, sniffing him curiously and pawing at him.
Melissa laughed lightly, relaxing her posture a bit when she saw all the puppies crowd around Lucas. "I bet they do. Looks like they like you, about as much as I do." She hummed softly, reaching out to pet one of the puppies. Clearly she wasn't really sure what to do with herself, knowing Lucas was quite the bit more familiar with dogs.
"Mhmm~…" Lucas sat up and sighed happily, holding one of the puppies close to his chest. It didn't seem to mind, just continuing to lick his cheek. "This is fantastic. Thank you, Mel."
Melissa gave him a soft smile, reaching out to scratch the puppy's head. "You really don't have to thank me." She hummed lightly, pausing before reaching up to pet him instead. "Your happiness is the only thanks I need."
Lucas leaned into Melissa's hand a bit and looked up at her, smiling softly. "Yeah, yeah… but really. Thank you." He kept scratching the puppy's head gently.
"Alright, fine. You're welcome." Melissa sighed softly, before pulling her smile back up. She reached out and started scratching the puppy's head as well. "Have you found a favorite one yet?"
Lucas nodded, holding the puppy in his arms closer. "This one seems to have gotten attached to me." The puppy whined happily, pressing its nose into Lucas's cheek.
"The puppy is attached?" Melissa teased, scooting closer to the two. "Are you sure you're not forgetting someone in that statement? You look pretty attached yourself."
Lucas grinned a bit and drew his knees up a bit so the puppy was huddled up in his lap. "Yeah, yeah… I'm pretty attached too. He and I are friends now."
Giving a light smile, Melissa leaned in to peck his cheek. "Is that the one, then?" She asked softly while she scratched the puppy's head.
"Mhmm~…" Lucas closed his eyes, seeming content. The puppy settled down and relaxed in his arms, looking over at Melissa curiously.
Melissa smiled a bit more as she scooted even closer to the two. "I should take you to get a puppy more often. You're so happy here." She hummed lightly, resting her head on Lucas's shoulder.
Lucas laughed a bit. "Mel, we'd have like, twenty puppies. And as fun as that would be, it would also be a lot of work. One is plenty for now." He toyed with the puppy's ears a bit.
"But you would be happyyy~" Melissa insisted, pouting a little as she looked up at him. "I like seeing you happy. It's better for you." Insisting a little, she continued to gently scratch the top of the small creature's head.
Lucas smiled gently. "Well, now we're gonna have a dog around all the time, so that should keep me pretty happy."
"Mm, that's true." Melissa hummed softly, nuzzling her nose into the crook of his neck. "I don't want to see you upset."
"Mmm.." Lucas rested his head against Melissa's, still smiling. "I love youuuu~…" He purred.
"I love you too~" Melissa hummed back, lifting her head. "You wanna get up, to go tell Ms. Goldman that we've picked?"
Lucas nodded and got to his feet, cradling the puppy in his arms like a baby. He carefully stepped over the gate with it and shifted the puppy so he'd have a free hand to help Melissa.
"Lu, you don't have to help me." Melissa said lightly, taking his hand despite what she had said. "You're carrying a puppy. You've got your hands kind of full."
"I can hold him like this." Lucas helped Melissa over and cradled the puppy again. It seemed to be falling asleep in his arms.
Giving a slight shake of her head, she stepped over on to the other side. “Just be careful. I don’t want you dropping the little guy.”
"I'm being careful, don't worry. He's sleepy anyway." Lucas smiled softly as he looked down at the puppy. He headed over to Ms. Goldman with the puppy in his arms. "Miss? We've decided on this one." She looked over from talking to Mr. Brennahan and smiled. "Wonderful! Great choice. He's a sweetheart."
"He really likes Lucas. He's already half asleep." Melissa noted softly, reaching out to pet the puppy. With a smile of his own, Mr. Brennahan turned to look between the two, and Ms. Goldman. "Is there papers to sign, or anything of the sort?" He asked Ms. Goldman, getting up from the chair he had been sitting on.
