When he opened it, she was trying her best to hold her grin back. There wasn't anything besides a slip of paper, folded over. "I know it seems odd, but trust me." Melissa told him softly, her grin pulling up.
Lucas seemed completely bewildered at this point. He tentatively picked up the piece of paper and opened it up.
In small blue writing, the little note read: Lucas, I know you'll probably try and argue out of this. But I've spent days trying to convince my parents to let me do this. After lots of persuasion, I finally got both my parents to agree, and I've got a surprise for you.
Waiting a couple of seconds, Melissa leaned forward to see his confused face. "You still promise not to protest?" She asked softly.
Lucas grew more confused as he read the letter. His heart felt like it would pound out of his chest. "…I have a feeling I'm going to want to protest, though." He laughed weakly, reading over the little note again.
"Oh definitely. But I really just want you to let me do this for you." Melissa hummed, leaning over to peck his cheek. "You wanna know what it is?"
"Um… yeah, I think so? Should I be anxious? Because I'm very anxious." Lucas laughed nervously and returned the kiss, fidgeting a bit.
Melissa kept up her grin, sitting back into the couch. "I don't think so. Unless you think going to get a puppy is something to be anxious about." She replied casually, waiting to see his reaction.
Lucas took a few seconds to process before he went pale, his heart pounding. "M-Melissa, you didn't…" He looked up at her, trying to read her expression. "There's no way."
Melissa nodded, keeping her grin up. She seemed mighty proud of herself at the moment. "I did. It took a lot of convincing, but I told them we were both trying to get jobs to get one anyways. My mom finally caved, and my dad said he would take us sometime soon." She hummed, still grinning.
Lucas's eyes stung with tears and he hugged Melissa tightly, burying his face in her shoulder. "Mel, y-you didn't have to do that for me… thank you so much, I… I-I don't know how to thank you…"
It took her a moment before hugging back, still smiling. "Of course I did. I love you, and want you to be happy." Melissa hummed, enjoying the hug while it lasted. "And you really don't have to. Just having you around is plenty."
Lucas nodded shakily, still clinging to Melissa. "I-I feel like there m-must be some way I can repay you, Mel, I… god… I don't know what to say."
"You don't have to say anything. I feel like this makes up for the surprise party." Melissa whispered to him, gently rubbing circles into his back. "So don't even think about 'making it up to me'."
Lucas sighed softly. "But the party was even more! Like, sure, it made me a bit nervous, but you still went out of your way to throw a birthday party for me!"
Melissa pulled back a little, tipping his chin up. "You don't have to repay me. You don't have to do anything for me. I wanted to make you happy, so if you are, that's all I need in return."
Lucas looked up at Melissa meekly, his eyes still shining with tears. "Thank you, Melissa. Really. It means a lot to me that you care this much."
Smiling lightly, Melissa placed a soft kiss on his lips. "I try my best. Most the time it pays off." She hummed, before dropping her head on his shoulder.
Lucas returned the kiss and rested his head against Melissa's, sighing shakily. He closed his eyes and hugged her tightly again.
"I love you," Melissa whispered a little, relax in to his hold. "I love you a lot."
(I'm bored right now, any suggestions for a quick sketch of the two?)
(Maybe with a puppy? :0)
"I love you too, Mel… so much." Lucas gently kissed Melissa's cheek and sighed happily.
(Puppyyyyy~ I'll do that lol. We'll see how it turns out. :P)
Pulling him with her, Melissa leaned back into the couch. "When do we want to go look for one?" She asked softly, reaching up to play with his hair.
(Ee)
"Um… as soon as possible, I guess? I'll have to do some research on where to find one and stuff… you know… breeders…"
"That's true. I can help you out, if you need it." Melissa offered, kissing his forehead. "But if you'd rather do it by yourself, that's fine."
"I don't mind you helping me, Mel. Maybe tomorrow, though? It's getting pretty late and I know we're both tired."
"Mm, yeah… can we still sit here for a little while longer?" She asked softly, running her thumb over his cheek.
"Of course, darling. As long as you want to stay is fine." Lucas leaned into Melissa's touch and closed his eyes.
"Alright… let me know if you want to go to sleep." Melissa hummed, continuing to stroke his cheek. "I don't want to keep you up, too late at least."
"Mmkay…" Lucas smiled softly and relaxed, keeping his eyes closed for now. He seemed to be content, albeit rather tired.
Melissa smiled a little as she studied his face. "So cute…" She whispered to herself, resting her head on the couch.
