Not even five minutes into her work, she glanced over to see her phone buzzing. She picked it up and smiled lightly at the pictures Lucas had sent her. "You two are cute~"
Lucas flushed a bit and smiled as well. You're cuter <3 He sighed softly and carefully turned onto his side, keeping Cody flush up against himself.
Melissa smiled softly, starting to type her response up. Pausing halfway through, she decided against trying to argue with him. 'Just accept the compliment.' Whatever you say, love <3
Lucas smiled more brightly and set his phone down, yawning a bit. He hoped Melissa's parents would be done arguing soon.
After around thirty minutes or so, Mr. Brennahan's office door could be heard opening. No voices followed, only two sets of feet in the hall above. Mr. Brennahan was coming down the stairs, Mrs. Brennahan nowhere to be seen. He looked tired and didn't even seem to notice Lucas lying down on the couch when he passed.
Lucas sat up when he saw him and looked over. "Mr. Brennahan? Sir? Are you alright?" He asked softly, looking a bit worried. "Is there anything I can do to help?"
Jumping a little, he glanced over to Lucas with a soft sigh. "I'm alright. Just tired." He started with a light sigh. "There's nothing you can do. Unless you know the mysteries of women, that is."
"Sorry, sir… not sure I'd know much more than you. Probably not even that much." Lucas smiled weakly. "Did it go okay?" He asked. "Is she still angry?"
"Unfortunately, she's still upset. But everything went alright, I guess. You don't need to worry about it though." Mr. Brennahan told him lightly, pulling up a smile. "I don't want to pull you into adult stuff."
Lucas sighed, looking away. "It's kind of my fault, though… I don't want you to have to get into a fight with your wife because of me, sir."
"It's not your fault, Lucas. I should have told her what was going on, but I kept things from her. A lot of other things were mixed in there too. You don't need to worry about it, alright?" Mr. Brennahan told him softly, coming up to the couch.
Lucas nodded a bit, holding Cody close to his chest after he sent a quick text to Melissa to say her father had come down. "I know, I know, I just… I can't help but feel guilty."
Mr. Brennahan sighed weakly, sitting next to Lucas. "Why do you feel like it's your fault?" He asked lightly, trying to keep up a friendly look on his tired face.
"Well, she was angry because Melissa and I are dating, and that's kinda my fault to begin with, and then we both agreed not to tell anyone, so I was being dishonest with both of you, and I really don't deserve how nice you guys are to me, and I should've just said no and gone down to the couch, a-and… I… s-sorry, I'm rambling…"
"Hey, it's alright. I'm the one who asked you. I half expected it." Mr. Brennahan told him softly, still smiling a little. "I'm not going to lie and say it wasn't partially your fault she got upset. Truth is, we all had a part to play here. I'm the one who kept things from her, when I'm not suppose to. You had no real reason to tell her what was going on. I could have- should have- but I didn't. I don't want you blaming yourself for me and my wife's argument. I chose to talk to her, and now it's done with. So don't worry about it, alright?"
Lucas exhaled shakily and hesitated before nodding a bit. He pulled Cody closer to his chest a and looked down at the couch. "I-I… um… yeah… Melissa is doing homework upstairs if you're looking for her…"
Mr. Brennahan nodded a little, resting a hand on Lucas's back. "Aright, thank you." He nodded a little, gently patting his back as he stood. "Oh- and Lucas. Don't think you don't deserve what we're trying to give you. You're a good kid, you definitely deserve it."
Lucas flushed a bit and nodded. "I-I… thank you, sir. Really, it means a lot…" His thoughts were going a mile a minute and his heart was thumping hard in his chest. He still felt antsy and nervous despite Mr. Brennahan's assurances.
As Mr. Brennahan started off, he stopped as he saw Melissa coming down the stairs. "Perfect timing. I was just coming up to get you." He hummed out, giving her a light smile. "Sorry, I would have been down sooner. I just didn't see Lucas's text."
Lucas looked up at Melissa and managed a weak smile. He stayed on the couch, sitting quietly with a sleeping Cody in his arms.
Melissa smiled back to Lucas, taking her father's hand and leading him over to the couch. "Me and Lucas had talked about setting a pen up for Cody. Do you have an opinion what we make it out of?" She asked him, sitting down next to Lucas and leaning up against him a bit. "Not particularly. I mean, not as long as it's easy to clean up afterwards."
"Do you know what might work best, sir? I'm not sure what you guys have laying around the house…" Lucas glanced around a bit.
"Well," Mr. Brennahan paused, resting his chin in his palm. "I'd offer one of the play pens, but I don't think we actually have any. Maybe boxes? Or something similar?"
Lucas nodded a bit. "Alright… I'll see what I can find. Thank you, sir." He dipped his head politely.
"No problem." Mr. Brennahan smiled, giving a light nod in return. Melissa smiled softly to her father, watching him starting to go. "Make sure to head to bed sometime soon. You two have school in the morning."
"Yes, sir." Lucas sighed softly when Mr. Brennahan left and lay back down on the couch. "Mm… where do you think we can find the stuff we need?" He asked.
"There might be boxes in the upstairs closet. I can grab them, since you're holding Cody." Melissa hummed lightly, gently running a thumb over his knee when he had lay down.
"Alright…" Lucas sighed and closed his eyes. "I hope your mother isn't too angry with us… we'll just have to assume that your father got through to her."
"He didn't tell you anything?" Melissa asked lightly, still petting his knee. "If not… I- I don't really think that's a good sign."
"He said everything went alright, but I didn't get much more than that…" Lucas sighed. "I just can't keep but feel guilty…"
