He shook his head. "Matthew, he…he can't be. He's not."

"Eyes don't lie. Why can't?" Matthew rocked a bit.

"Because… he's…" He shook his head a little. "Because he's one of the types of people that…that thinks being like me is a sin, alright?"

"But it's not a choice!" It was one of Mathew's first full sentences.
"Do you choose?"

Alex's eyes flashed to him. "No…but…the Bible says that it…that it is, and… people believe that."

"Then he can't choose." Matthew smiled, thinking he had won.

"Yes he can. He can choose to…to deny it and push it away, and there's no…he doesn't feel the way you think, Matthew."

Matthew huffed.
"Lying bad."

Alex shrugged, looking down at his hands and letting out a breath. "Yeah. Well."

Matthew huffed a bit.

Alex took a deep breath, running his hands through his hair.

"So Gabe is lying?" Matthew looked up at Alex.

"Wh—what do you mean?"

"To himself. About you." Matthew tilted his head.

"I…I don't know." Alex replied, looking down at his hands.

Matthew hummed a bit, rocking.
"I do."

He shrugged, looking down at his hands. "I'm pretty sure you're wrong, but… alright."

Matthew huffed, scooting off the couch. Martha came into the room.
"How are you two doing?" She asked gently.

"Fine." Alex replied softly, tucking back a strand of hair.

Matthew nodded, going over to his mother's side.
"That's good to hear."

Alex nodded slightly, biting his lip and unsure what to do.

Martha looked at the clock.
"It's eleven thirty now. I'll get started on lunch. How much would you like?" She asked of Alex.

Alex blinked. "Oh– I don't…I don't eat much…so just a little bit…"

"Alright then," Martha said. She went over to the stove, starting to cook.

Alex was quiet, looking down at his hands and letting out a breath.

Martha hummed as she cooked. When it was done, she put some on a plate for Alex.
"Here," she said with a smile.

Alex took it, hesitantly returning the smile. "Thank you."

Martha nodded.
"You're welcome." She sat down with Matthew, helping him eat when need be.
