Lucas hesitated a few seconds before nodding. "Yeah. I think he would. He'd have thought more about what he was doing, who he'd be hurting… and I don't think he'd have done it."
Lucas hesitated a few seconds before nodding. "Yeah. I think he would. He'd have thought more about what he was doing, who he'd be hurting… and I don't think he'd have done it."
Melissa sighed softly, resting her head on his shoulder. "I'm so sorry… I wish I could have done more." Melissa said softly, reaching up and petting his head.
"It's not your fault, Mel…" Lucas kissed Melissa's cheek softly and sighed, closing his eyes. "It's mine. I… I kept to myself more than I should've. I should've talked to him more."
"That's why I should have tried to reach out to you… but I was caught up in my own little world. That was a pretty crappy move on my part." Melissa replied in a soft tone, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.
"It's okay, Mel… we were kids." Lucas smiled weakly. "None of us knew how to handle the situation. I should have reached out to you sooner, love."
"I just… it's pointless to worry about it now, I know. But I still feel awful." Melissa sighed softly, looking up at him. "I wish I could have done things differently."
"And I as well, but there's nothing that can be done, so we should talk about something a bit lighter." Lucas offered another weak smile and turned his gaze over the edge of the cliff again. I could fall… I could end it right here. He paled a bit and moved away from the ledge.
Melissa watched him move, and started to panic. She had totally just ruined his mood. "I- right… sorry." Melissa said softly, scooting back with him a little. "I don't know when to stop. I… should we go back and look for the basket?"
"Yes, probably… maybe you left it at home?" Lucas suggested, carefully getting to his feet and offering his hand to Melissa, trying not to let the conversation dampen his mood too much.
"I- I could always call and ask. If I did, we can always go out for lunch." Melissa hummed a little, taking his hand. She was purposely avoiding the house- they couldn't go back there until later. It would ruin the surprise, for later that night.
"Alright, that sounds fine to me." Lucas led Melissa back through the sunflowers, trying to keep his eyes off of the cliff.
"Are… are you alright? I didn't push things too far, did I?" Melissa asked in a soft tone, using her free hand to fiddle with a strand of hair.
"I'm okay, Mel. Just a couple passing, unwelcome thoughts. I'll be fine." He smiled weakly, brushing his fingers against the sunflowers again.
Nodding a little, Melissa tried to relax herself. "Well, if I can do anything, tell me." She insisted, pulling her phone from her pocket to call her father.
"Alright." Lucas gently kissed Melissa's cheek and kept walking, keeping his eyes on the sunflowers.
Pulling up his contact, she tapped the call button and used her shoulder to hold her phone. "If he doesn't answer, are you alright going out to eat?"
"Mhmm. I have money with me, but I know you're probably not going to let me pay." Lucas laughed softly.
"I mean, we can always split the check if you want. I don't want you to have to pay, but it's your birthday. I won't stop you, if that's what you want." Melissa hummed a little, hearing the phone on the other end cut off. "Looks like he's not picking up."
"Alright, sounds good to me, Mel." Lucas smiled and led Melissa out of the sunflower field. "I've missed this place."
"We can always come back if you want. Though I have a feeling you're probably getting hungry." Melissa hummed, glancing over to him with a smile.
"Little bit, yeah." Lucas laughed a bit. "Where do you want to go for lunch, Mel?"
"I don't have a preference. Wherever you wanna go." Melissa hummed, pocketing her phone before pulling him to a stop. " But if you absolutely can't decide, I have an idea."
"What's your idea, darling?" Lucas asked softly, smiling a bit. "I'm happy to go there."
Smiling softly, she slid her arms over his shoulder. "I mean, I'll probably just get a salad, but I know there's a small diner around the corner." Melissa offered, with a little shrug. "Though might I say, I like it when you use pet names."
Lucas grinned and pulled Melissa close to kiss her. "Is that so, darling? I'll be sure to use them more often, then~" He purred.
Melissa hummed, leaning in a little. "It is so… I like knowing I'm the one girl you use them on." She whispered a little, kissing his lips.
Lucas smiled and gently kissed Melissa again. "Of course. It'd be weird if I called everyone darling. You know I'd be more flustered than the recipient." He laughed.
Melissa smiled softly, resting her head on his shoulder. "I mean, it would be especially strange for your teammates." She whispered, lifting her eyes up to study his face.
"Yeah. Imagine me going around calling all the guys darling." Lucas snickered. "I'd be asked some interesting questions, for sure."
"Would you do it, one day, just to see their reactions?" Melissa asked softly, keeping up a light smile. "I'm not saying for real, but metaphorically."
