"Well, it's probably easier to hug me if I'm not laying down." Lucas flushed a bit, staring down at the bed.
"Well, it's probably easier to hug me if I'm not laying down." Lucas flushed a bit, staring down at the bed.
Laughing lightly, Melissa sat back down on the edge and wrapped her arms around his waist. "That's true… but I mean, I could have just lain on top of you." She offered with a light shrug and holding on tightly.
Lucas flushed red, his eyes wide. "I-I… um… you… y-you really didn't have to, Mel…" He stammered nervously.
"I was joking, Lu." Melissa whispered, pulling back to look at his face. "I didn't think that would bug you. I'm sorry, I just wasn't thinking straight. It sounded a lot better in my head."
"R-Right…" Lucas hugged Melissa and buried his red face in her shoulder to try and hide it.
"That really bugged you…" Melissa whispered, in more of a statement form. Reaching up she began to pet the top of his head. "I'm really sorry…"
"N-No, don't feel bad, Mel, I-I just… um… it kinda surprised me, and… and I probably took it the wrong way…" Lucas buried his face further into Melissa's shoulder, trembling slightly.
With his words, her brow furrowed for a moment until she realized what he meant. "O-oh… I- god that sounds way, way worse than I ever intended." Melissa replied weakly, feeling her face start to burn as a red color made it's way up her face.
"I'm… I-I'm sorry, I shouldn't have taken it that way… I'm just stupid…" Lucas was still trembling a bit and was trying his best to keep his red face hidden.
"Hey- I'm the one who said it. We're both tired, so this isn't helping anything." Melissa said softly, keeping her voice together quite well. "I promise, I wouldn't ever purposely say something like that. Not only does it make you uncomfortable, it makes me just as uncomfortable."
Lucas nodded shakily. "R-Right… I… I'm still sorry though, Mel…"
Pulling back a little, she tried to relax her jittery hands. "It's really alright. Like I said, I'm the one who said it. I should have been thinking more clearly."
Lucas looked up at Melissa meekly, his face still flushed deep red. He fidgeted nervously and looked away.
Her own face was still red, but no where near as bad as his. "You gonna be alright?" Melissa asked softly, starting to pull back from him.
"Y-Yeah, I think so… I just… need a minute, I think…" Lucas closed his eyes and drew in a few deep breaths.
"Would it be best if I left you alone?" Melissa asked softly as she stood up. "Because I can go do homework downstairs."
"N-No, you can stay if you want to, Mel… You're fine." Lucas fidgeted and sighed.
"You sure? Because I feel like my presence is going to keep you like this for longer than usual. Don't think you're being mean." Melissa insisted in a soft tone.
"I'm not going to tell you to leave, Mel. I like having you around."
"But can you actually relax while I'm around? Be honest with me, I can take it." Melissa insisted, crossing her arms across her chest as she waited for an answer.
"Um… probably…?" Lucas replied tentatively. "I mean, it's definitely better than me being alone in this state."
"I- yeah, that's true." Melissa sighed softly, pulling the chair out from under her desk. "I'm still sorry I said anything like that in the first place." Mumbling a bit, she pulled her legs up on to the chair with her.
"It's okay." Lucas curled up into a ball on the bed and sighed, waiting for his pain meds to kick in.
Melissa watched him in silence for a few minutes, wishing she could help. But it seemed whenever she tried, he ended up in a worse state. "I just wish I could help…"
"You do help, Mel…" Lucas murmured, close to falling asleep by now.
"If that's what you think, Lu." Melissa whispered, watching him start to slip off. She'd wait to leave until he was sleeping, she didn't want to be rude.
Lucas soon drifted off to sleep, evident by him finally relaxing. He sighed softly and huddled into the covers.
Melissa glanced up, and saw him asleep. "God, I wish he could be this relaxed when awake…" She mumbled softly as she got up. Having grabbed her earbuds off her desk, she leaned over and kissed him gently before heading out. "I'll let him sleep for an hour, and then come wake him up."
Lucas smiled softly in his sleep when Melissa kissed him and huddled into the covers more. He seemed to be comfortable at the moment, at least.
As she made her way out of her room, she could hear her father's voice, and sighed. It sounded like this was important, so clearly he would be there for awhile longer. She would be alone, until her mom or brother got home. Oh how she hoped Gabriel would be home first. With a light frown, she made her way down the rest of the stairs in silence.
(Shall we skip an hour or so?)
