"Okay…" Lucas gently touched his cheek and winced. He looked up when Melissa got into the car.
Ducking in, she slid up next to him with a soft sigh. "There's nothing I can do?" Melissa asked hopelessly, clicking her seat belt in place.
"Not that I know of, Mel. And definitely not in the car. There isn't exactly much in here in the way of medical supplies."
The car starting moving once everyone was settled. Melissa turned back to him with a weak sigh, taking his hand in hers again. "I know that…"
Lucas smiled weakly and laced his fingers with Melissa's. "I'll be alright, Mel. Don't worry about me."
"I'm definitely worried." Melissa whispered, scanning over his face. "I just… I hate seeing you hurt."
"I know, but I'll recover. I'll be just fine, Mel. The nurse said it wasn't that bad of a concussion anyways."
"Yeah, but it doesn't change how I feel." She insisted, biting into her lip. "You're making me nervous… someday it's going to be worse. Too bad to come back from."
Lucas sighed softly. "Mel… don't think like that. I'm gonna be okay. I don't live with my dad anymore. He can't hurt me anymore."
"I'm sorry- but I can't help it. You've gotten more hurt, while I'm around. It's just getting worse, and I'm scared for you." Melissa said weakly, trying not to let those thoughts consume her.
"Melissa. Calm down for me, yeah? Shh…" Lucas gently ran his thumb along the back of Melissa's hand. "I'm gonna try my best to stay safe. That's all I can do. But worrying about it constantly isn't going to help much."
Trying to relax, she let her eyes fall closed and sucked in a few deep breaths. "I-I'm sorry… I shouldn't be worrying…"
"It's alright, Mel… I understand why you're worrying, but you don't need to. I'm gonna be alright."
"I still am, though." Melissa whispered, trying to focus on the touch of his hand on her own. He was living, and breathing. Until both of those stopped, she really didn't need to worry.
Lucas smiled weakly. "It'll be alright Mel. I'll be alright. I'm gonna be fine and dandy in just a couple days."
'Until you get hurt again…' Nodding softly, she forced a smile up and rested her head on his shoulder. "You better be."
"I'm gonna try my best, Mel." Lucas rested his head against Melissa's and closed his eyes, sighing softly.
"That's all I ask." Melissa whispered, relaxing as she leaned into him.
Lucas nodded, slowly relaxing as they made their way back home. He was pretty weak at the moment and he was exhausted, but all things considered, he was doing alright.
When they pulled up to her house, she very gently lifted her head. "Lu," She started, starting to get out of the car. "We're back."
"Mmmm…" Lucas sat up and unbuckled himself with a sigh. "Alright, alright…" He pushed open the door and got out. After he took a few steps towards the door, he stumbled and fell into the grass.
Making her way over to him, she kneeled down next to him. "You alright?" Melissa asked softly, watching her dad get their bags. "I can get those- I just need to get him inside first."
"Yeah… world's kinda spinning, though…" Lucas pushed himself up into a sitting position, holding his head as he swayed.
"You deal with him, honey. I'm fine." Her father said softly, heading in the house. Sighing softly, Melissa took his free hand to try and pull him up. "We definitely need to get you inside and lying down."
"Mm…" Lucas dragged himself to his feet with Melissa's help and allowed her to escort him inside.
As she half carried him up the stairs to her room, she glanced up at him. "Do you want ice?"
"Um… probably…?" Lucas climbed up the stairs with Melissa, trying to not burden her too much.
Nodding a bit, she reached her door and pushed it open. "Once I get you settled, I'll do that." She hummed lightly.
"Mmkay…" Lucas let Melissa drag him inside her room and lay down on the bed with a soft sigh.
As soon as he was set, she gently kissed the top of his head. "So ice? And you already had pain killers, right?"
