Jack had been there early, of course. He'd seated himself in the back corner of the classroom away from everyone and Davis. Even though he was good at maths, he didn't want to be here at all today.
Jack had been there early, of course. He'd seated himself in the back corner of the classroom away from everyone and Davis. Even though he was good at maths, he didn't want to be here at all today.
Davis sat and listened to their teacher explain quadratic formulas, trying not to groan from the fact that it's something that they already know. His thoughts drift towards his friends.
Mark has some nice muscles…. His face flushes in embarrassment upon realizing the arrant thought. Stop it!
Jack glanced over at Davis, trying not to let his gaze linger and get caught. He noticed the blush and raised and eyebrow, though turned back to his book. Why would Davis be blushing? At maths?
"Mr. Jones?" Mrs. Crabtree called, attempting to get the young man's attention. "Perhaps you could solve the problem, or are you too busy daydreaming?"
Davis looked up to see that their math teacher now stood directly in front of him. She pointed to the Smart-board where an unsolved formula sat waiting. He swore under his breath as he stood and approached the board, already doing some of the work in his head.
Far too early in the day for this.
Jack bit his lip. He scribbled down the answer on a piece of paper and held it up when the teacher wasn’t looking. Hopefully Davis would see it before he had to hide the answer. He didn’t know what compelled him to help his bully out but he did it anyway.
Davis turned to look at his classmates, specifically Allison, and saw that Jackson had quickly wrote the answer down on a piece of paper. His brow scrunches up in confusion.
Mr. Know-it-all is sticking his neck out for me? Why? Deciding to take a chance Davis copies the answer onto the board. He looks towards Mrs. Crabtree, smirking at her.
Mrs. Crabtree sighs. "Go back to your seat, Mr. Jones, and wipe that smug look off your face!" She then goes on to show how Davis, through Jack, had gotten the correct answer.
"Good job Davey," Allison says, tucking some hair behind her ear and giving him a small grin.
Jackson rolled his eyes, scrunching up the piece of paper. He started copying down the notes from the board, even though he knew all this and didn't need to. At least Mrs Crabtree wouldn't single him out if it looked like he was working.
(I love that Jack took pity on him. 😍 Nobody likes being singled out like that.)
Class went by slowly, as it usually did. Davis took his notes, filling them out where necessary. He'd occasionally glance at Jackson, wondering why the smaller male did what he did.
Don't overthink it, Davis. He was just giving you pity for being called out.
(Bruh I'd hate it if that happened to me and so would Jack)
Jack tried not to think about what or why he did what he did. It was stupid and he was too kind sometimes. And it was Davis of all people. When class ended, Jack breathed a sigh of relief, packing up his books.
Davis, for once, didn't waste any time at his locker. Instead he simply ignored Jack, gathered what he needed for his next class, which he didn't have with Jackson. Prowling down the hallway he grins, overhearing rumors of events that may or not have happened during the weekend.
"I heard that Davis took Allison out on a romantic getaway. God, she's so lucky! one girl is heard saying. "I wish he'd notice me!"
Jack didn't know if he was lucky that Davis was ignoring him or not. It was strange though but he didn't bother to ask about it. He had a free for his next lesson so he slunk away to the library to get some reading done.
(Kinda feel like introducing another character so Jack has a friend.)
(Ooo okay maybe further down the line Davis gets jealous of said friend?)
(Maybe.)
A somewhat tall, dark haired boy with a short, layered haircut came into the library, beelining for the fiction section.
Hmmm…. Maybe something like Salem's Lot, or anything by Edgar Allen Poe, he thought, pulling The Fall of the House of Usher and The Masque of the Red Death from the shelves. After checking them out he makes his way to a beanbag chair, carefully flops down, and notices Jackson.
Jack was curled up in a chair not too far away. He was small enough to do so but he didn’t really care at this point, one leg swung over the arm of the chair. He was re-reading Lord of the Rings and was so lost in the book he didn’t notice the other boy looking at him.
The boy started to read, having bookmarked where he left off in his own collection of Poe short stories and poems. He glances up at Jack again.
"I see you're into 'classic literature' as well," he says after noticing what the other boy was reading.
Jackson blinked, lowering his book so that his eyes were visible as he glanced at the other boy, “It’s the best kind. They’re so full of emotions that today’s books seem to lack.”
The boy chuckles. "True, but that isn't to say that there aren't any modern books that have the same feel." He extricates himself from the beanbag, gathers his things, and moves to join Jackson at his table.
Jackson shrugged, sitting up straight in his chair, “That is true. But I prefer classics anyway. I just think there’s something more magical about them.”
(He's not the type to introduce himself. Just the fact that he initiated conversation was kinda out of character for him….)
"So far I've only read The Hobbit," he says, looking down in embarrassment. "I've seen the movies though!"
“You’ve never read Lord of the Rings?!” Jack blinked in surprise, “You’re missing out because they’re amazing! I’m Jackson, by the way.”
"It's nice to meet you Jackson. I'm Jason," he says with a smile, placing his gloved hands on the table. "I plan on reading them, but I've been on a Poe kick lately."
Jackson hummed a little, smiling down at his book, "Poe is pretty good, I went through a faze and just exclusively read them. Haven't picked them up for a while though."
"The Tell Tale Heart is to blame. I've read The Count of Monte Cristo, started The Portrait of Dorian Grey, and have Danté's Inferno on my to read list."
"Nice list. I'm making my way through all of the Middle Earth law at the moment so I'll read the Simirillion after. Even though I should have read it first."
(Sorry that I haven't been on this in so long…. 2020 has not been kind.)
(don't worry bro, I understand)
"Heh," Jason snickers. "Well, since I'm new to this school, mind telling me what and who I should watch out for?"
"Davis," Jack said without hesitation, "Watch out for Davis and his gang. He'll make your life hell if you get on his bad side… or even if he just.. don't like you.." He shrugged, looking down at his lap.
"Davis?" Jason inquires, tilting his head. "Which one is that? I don't think I have any classes with him."
