@Fraust

Lucas nodded. "Yeah. I'll get through it." He ate a bit more of the sandwich and tried to remember everything he needed to tell her.

@Fraust

"Um… sure, that's fine." Lucas took a sip of water and soon finished his sandwich. "I might just have you ask some questions first if that's cool with you… I'll answer as honestly as I can."

@Fraust

Lucas nodded. He hesitated for a few seconds before starting to clean up. "Um… I'll head over, and you can come whenever you're ready…"

@Fraust

"Alright…" Lucas sat down at the table and fidgeted nervously. "Um… ask away, Melissa. Anything you want to know."

Melissa brought up a chair next to him, crossing her legs once she had sat down. "What happened after your mom died? You said you two were going through a lot, but what did you mean?" She started tenderly, reaching out to take his hand.

@Fraust

Lucas laced his fingers with Melissa's and sighed. "Well, Claus and I were very attached to her. My father was always distant. When she died, we only had each other, pretty much, and neither of us was emotionally stable enough to help the other. We didn't want to talk because we were just trying to block out our emotions. We became empty husks of our former selves, and that was a more drastic change for Claus. He used to be so bold and courageous and outgoing… falling into such a state scared him, I think. He felt like he wasn't even himself anymore and kept spiralling down, and yet neither of us reached out to the other still. I guess he just couldn't take it anymore three years later…"

Nodding softly, she tried to keep from getting overly emotional at his response. "I really wish I had tried to talk to you both…" Melissa replied weakly, her eyes starting to prick with tears yet she blinked them back. "Did your father start hurting you after Claus died?"

@Fraust

Lucas nodded, rubbing at his own forming tears. "He… h-he was verbally abusive to us both to some extent, although he favored Claus. The physical stuff didn't start until after Claus died."

A lump formed in her throat, that she barely swallowed down. "And this went on for a long time… did you ever think to tell anyone? Did anyone know?" Melissa asked softly, lifting her gaze up to meet his.

@Fraust

Lucas shook his head. "No one knew… I kept quiet. My dad always threatened me about calling the police, so I never did. I was scared of him. You're the only ones who know now."

@Fraust

"I had to for school, but for the most part, I was required to stay inside. Obviously, I snuck out a fair few times, but I really wasn't supposed to leave for anything but school. That's why I couldn't usually come over this summer."

@Fraust

"They asked, but I lied. I unfortunately became quite good at lying during that time…" Lucas sighed. "Mostly they just assumed I was sad about my mother, I guess."

@Fraust

"…Pretty often." Lucas looked down at the table, feeling guilty. "I-I didn't want to worry you, and I always felt horrible about it, I just… you couldn't know…"

Standing up, she tilted his chin so he would look up to her. "And yet I still found out." Melissa whispered, taking both of his hands in her own. "Do you know that you can trust me with anything? Because, if I'm being honest with you, I wonder if you feel like you can."

@Fraust

Lucas flushed a bit. "I do! I do trust you, and I always have. I was really just scared of my dad finding out, and that paired with knowing how much it would worry you… I kept quiet."

@Fraust

"Um… not quite, no. I didn't have the guts to do it at that point." Lucas thought for a few seconds to remember exactly when. "I think it was about a year after she died, but only sporadically. It was a lot more after Claus died."

@Fraust

"It… it wasn't too bad at first. Like I said, I was too scared to go very far… it started off with really shallow cuts. Only a little more substantial than paper cuts. After Claus died was the first time I went deep enough that it could've gone horribly wrong…"

Her face grew sickly pale, and her heart ached in her chest at his words. "I…I should have called you…" Melissa whispered weakly, burying her face in her hands. "I should have done something to make sure you were alright…"

@Fraust

Lucas flushed a bit and looked down at the table guiltily again. "I'm sorry, Mel… I… I'm the one who should have called you…"

"N-no," She insisted, sitting back down in the chair. Head in her hands, she was attempting to drown down her tears. "I knew things were getting really rough. I remember that night vividly, and I almost called. I chickened out before I had even opened your contact." Melissa whispered, lifting her head up so she could look at him.
