"Um… we're probably going to go to the park again, at least for a little while. It's good to get out of the house while the weather is still nice."
"Um… we're probably going to go to the park again, at least for a little while. It's good to get out of the house while the weather is still nice."
"That's true. Especially while you're young, you don't get much of a chance the older you get." Mr. Brennahan laughed softly, coming back over to the pot of coffee. "Maybe bring a jacket with you. It's suppose to be cooler today."
Lucas nodded. "I tend to spend as much time as possible out of the house, to be honest… at least my own house. I-I mean, it's not particularly fun to hang around in a place where I don't feel safe." He laughed weakly.
"Makes sense. You don't want to feel helpless." He nodded, pouring a cup of coffee and sipping it slowly. "You're sure I can't get you something?"
"I'm sure, sir." Lucas moved out of the way again. "You know, I sleep better here than at my own house. Funny, isn't it?" He laughed weakly.
"No surprise to me. I'm hoping you feel safer here." He chuckled some, hearing Melissa pad down the stairs and bound in the room. "There's miss sunshine, I'll leave you kids to it." Smiling, he made his way back over to the table just as Melissa came in the room.
Lucas smiled weakly and nodded. "You ready to go to the park, Melissa?" He asked, looking over at her when she came in.
Smoothing down her hoodie sweatshirt, she smiled back at him. "Yup! As long as you are, of course." Melissa chirped, walking up and taking his hand in her own.
"Mhmm." Lucas flushed a little again and let Melissa pull him away. "Goodbye, Mr. Brennahan." He managed to say before he was dragged off.
Melissa pulled him along to the door, waving to her father as she did. "I thought we would just walk today." She hummed, pulling the door open.
"Sure. Sounds good to me." Lucas hummed softly as well and closed the door behind them. "In the park or just around here?"
"We can explore for a bit, and head to the park later." Melissa shrugged, holding onto his hand a little tighter than usual.
"Alright." Lucas entwined his fingers with Melissa's and hummed softly while they walked. "Anywhere particular you want to go?"
"Just explore for now. Somewhere out in the sun mostly, it's kind of chilly today." Melissa nodded, swinging their arms back and forth in between them. "Unless you like being cold."
"Not particularly." Lucas smiled softly as they walked along. "I don't have enough body fat to do well in the cold."
“I’ll make sure to keep feeding you to build that up. But for now, we’ll have a nice walk.” Melissa chirped, watching their feet while they walked. “Is there something in particular we need to talk about?”
"Um… not that I can think of, really… anything you want to talk about?" Lucas asked, looking over at Melissa curiously. "I'm open to anything."
“Not right now, at least. Though at some point,” Melissa paused, lifting their linked hands to eye level. “We'll need to address this situation.”
Lucas blushed a bit and nodded. "Y-Yeah, we… we should probably talk about that to figure out what the hell we're gonna do." He laughed weakly.
Laughing as well, Melissa sucked in a deep breath to prepare herself. "Are we even ready for a relationship like that? Either of us?"
"Mentally? Emotionally? Who knows, honestly?" Lucas laughed weakly again. "I'm an emotional wreck. We both know that. But if you were willing to pursue a relationship with me, I would try my best."
"Is it too soon for you, though? With everything that's happened recently, are you up for that?" She asked him softly, still focusing on the ground from before. "I'm not even sure I'm quite ready."
"I-I mean… like I said, I'll try my best, but if you're not ready to be an official thing yet, that's fine with me." Lucas fidgeted nervously. "Things have been rough, but being around you more often is sure to be a good thing."
"I would hope so. And I promise that it's me, nothing about you. I'm just really not sure, about the whole idea of a relationship…" She mumbled biting into her soft lip. "The idea just feels kind of… damaged in my own mind."
Lucas nodded a bit. "Why's that, Mel?" He asked softly, looking over at her with a gentle, kind expression.
"I… just… my mom. Everything she says to me, I guess has made me worried about things like that." Melissa half whispered, looking up and over to him.
"Mm… we don't need to tell them yet, Melissa. Though… your dad seems to have some suspicions, and he seems to be okay with it from what I can tell. I think he likes me."
"It's not just that. It's the whole idea… it feels corrupt. I… I'm being ridiculous, I know." Melissa mumbled letting out a heavy sigh. "But knowing my dad likes you makes things easier."
"What exactly do you mean by corrupt, Mel?" Lucas asked, a little bit confused. "I can try to make you feel better about it?"
"J-just… I… don't know how to explain it. The way my mother speaks is visual. She finds the smallest things to break apart. Especially when she's mad. Relationships, and dating, and love in general just seems so… unreal. The thing you see in movies and books just sounds fake to me."
