If possible, Lucas's cheeks grew redder and his heart sped up more. "Um… y-yeah… sure, Mel…" He replied weakly, preparing himself for her to say she just wanted to be friends.
If possible, Lucas's cheeks grew redder and his heart sped up more. "Um… y-yeah… sure, Mel…" He replied weakly, preparing himself for her to say she just wanted to be friends.
Taking in a deep breath, she tried to figure out how to word her feelings. Though the only thing that came to mind, was simple and straight forwards. “I like you too… a lot… and have for a long time…” Melissa whispered, gazing into his striking blue eyes.
"R-Really?" Lucas seemed surprised, and his shaking didn't stop despite how immensely relieved he was. "You… y-you aren't mad at me?"
“Of course not, even if I… I didn’t like you, I would never be mad at your feelings.” Melissa whispered, only taking in now how close they really were.
Lucas nodded weakly. "I-I just… I assumed you'd be mad because I never told you and you didn't feel the same way and you'd be horrified that I've liked you all this time…"
Pulling back just slightly, she gave him a soft sigh and smile. “I was horrified when you fell from the tree, I would not be horrified for finding out you had a crush on me.” Melissa laughed weakly, taking his hands to pull him over to the couch.
Lucas blushed again and sat down. "I guess I was scared that you'd reject me… I-I mean, we've been friends for so long. I didn't want to ruin that."
Biting into her lip, she took in a deep breath. “Do you think…. think we should be together though? With everything… everything going on, is that the smartest move?”
"I-I dunno… I mean… not openly at the moment, at least… your parents would definitely kill us then." Lucas laughed weakly.
Scooting closer to him, she gave him a soft smile. “That would be incredibly dumb, now wouldn’t it?” Melissa asked with a laugh, glancing over to the kitchen. “Why… why don’t we talk about this outside? We’ll have better privacy out there.”
Lucas nodded and stood up again to head outside with Melissa. He sat down on the front steps and fidgeted nervously.
Sitting next to him, she rested her head on his shoulder. "What are we going to do?" She asked softly, taking a gentle hold of his arm.
"I dunno, Mel…" Lucas sighed softly and rested his head atop Melissa's. "Suffer, I suppose." He laughed halfheartedly.
Laughing as well, Melissa shoved his shoulder just slightly. "Oh don't say that. We'll work something out." She hummed, slipping her hand into his.
"I guess so." Lucas entwined his fingers with Melissa's and sighed softly. "We're a mess, aren't we?"
Giving a weak laugh, she nodded rather vigorously. "We're an incredibly awful mess. I don't even know where to begin with us." Melissa whispered, letting out her own sigh.
"Mhmm…" Lucas looked out at the street and hummed softly to himself. "Well, we gotta start figuring it out at some point."
Biting into her lip, she felt she was taking a risk with her next question. "Were… were you talking about me earlier? When you said you loved someone." She asked weakly, doing her best to glance up to him.
Lucas flushed red again and nodded. "Um… y-yeah. I wasn't exactly ready to tell you I liked you that way yet…"
"And there I was, thinking the very opposite." Melissa groaned, pulling away from him to rest her face in her hands. "I've been trying to convince myself you didn't like me…"
"Well, I've sort of been doing the same… I'm hella paranoid all the time, though, so that doesn't really surprise me."
Letting out a soft sigh, she lifted her head from her hands. "Are you still paranoid?" Melissa asked him softly, tilting his head to face hers.
"Well… yeah. I'm always paranoid. Why?" Lucas asked, cocking his head to the side a bit in confusion.
Biting into her lip, she trained her gaze on him. "But… why are you currently paranoid? Is it about… me, or us?"
"Well, I'm not usually paranoid or anxious about anything in particular. It's just sort of a persistent feeling." Lucas explained. "It's always there to some extent, sometimes it just gets worse."
Finding herself leaning in just slightly, she nodded. "Yeah… that makes sense." She whispered, cupping his cheek and slowly ran her thumb over his cheek.
Lucas closed his eyes and melted into Melissa's touch, a gentle smile growing onto his features. "You get used to it after a while."
"You do?" Melissa asked him softly, finding her own self relaxing as she pet him. Her breathing was slow, the same as he speech and movements. Everything was just… gentle.
"I mean… you have to. It's crippling if you don't." Lucas kept his eyes closed, seeming content and comfortable.
"I need you to teach me, how on earth you can be so paranoid, and yet so calm at once." She whispered with a light laugh.
