Giving him a tight hug around the waist, she let out the deep breath she had been holding in her chest. “Good. He needs to be.” She whispered, resting her head on his.
Lucas nodded weakly. "I-I just… I still feel guilty…" He whispered, tightening his grip on Melissa a bit.
"It's because he wanted you to feel guilty." Melissa whispered back, rubbing his shoulder. "Don't be, he doesn't deserve for you to be guilty about this."
"Y-You're right… I… I'm sorry…" He replied softly. "W-We should go inside." He reluctantly pulled away from Melissa and sighed.
"Lu, if you need to cry I'm not going to make fun of you for it." She told him softly, holding his chin in between her fingers. "Or if you still want a hug, I won't pull away until you do."
"I-I'm fine, Mel…" He replied softly, his voice breaking a bit. "Let's just… sit down for a sec…" He sat down on the front steps, trying to subtly brush away the tears that were forming.
Finding herself starring out at the neighbor hood, she spoke softly what was on her mind. "The world is cruel. It's so odd how to protect one person, it's like you have to hurt another. Even if it's to protect yourself, you could end up getting hurt."
Lucas looked up at her, slightly surprised. "I-I… yeah. The world's a horrible, shitty place. There's bad people, bad situations, bad events, just… everything kinda sucks most of the time."
"Until you find the diamond in the rough. That one special person that makes life worth living." Melissa offered him, elbow poised on her knee for her to lean on. "They seem like the only thing worth living for, and you just hope they never disappear."
Lucas nodded. "I suppose so." He hummed softly. "One person who's really the only reason you've kept yourself alive this long." He sighed, looking out upon the road.
"Do you have that person?" Melissa asked blankly, not really caring whether it was her or not. As long as he had someone who he cared for, and they cared for back. "Is there one person you really only hang on to, because they love you too much to let go?"
"Um… yeah, I think so. W-Well, I care too much about them to let go, but obviously I can't speak for anyone but myself…" Lucas glanced over at Melissa, blushing.
Nodding slightly, Melissa took in a deep breath. "When it came down to it, there are only three people that I'd actually say loved me. Though, really I can't be sure without asking. And there's still the chance they could lie to me."
Lucas nodded as well, fidgeting with his hands. "There's only really one person I love right now… Well, one person who's alive. Obviously I still love mom and Claus."
"One person?" Melissa asked him softly, still not turning to look at his face. "Would you be up to telling me? You don't have to, if it's too private."
Lucas flushed harder, looking away. "U-Um… maybe… maybe later, Mel." If I ever grow some balls and tell you…
It's not me… Trying to blink back tears at the burning realization, she nodded weakly. "Y-yeah, sure." She barely got out, trying to swallow the rising lump in her throat. "You don't ever have to tell me, if you aren't up to it."
"Melissa? Are… are you okay?" Lucas asked softly. Shit… I upset her. What did I do wrong?
(contemplates having him confess now)
"Yup, peachy keen." She smiled rather forcefully, trying not to think about the feeling deep in her stomach. Looking to him, she didn't let anything but her 'perfectly fine' composure through. "Why do you ask?"
(Tries not to convince you either way)
"B-Because you look upset…" He said quietly, seeming concerned. "I… I-I didn't mean to upset you, Mel… I don't want you to be sad or anything."
"You didn't upset me, I was just trying to relax my features." She shrugged, leaning back on her elbows. "So don't worry about it, I'm perfectly fine." Slowly her smile morphed into something more realistic, and carefree.
"'Relax your features'?" Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Seriously, what's wrong? I wanna fix it if I can, Mel."
"There's nothing for you to fix, so don't worry about it." Melissa half argued, trying to keep her tone relaxed. She didn't want to snap on him, he didn't need the pressure right now. "You didn't do a thing, so seriously, don't worry."
Lucas still seemed worried and unconvinced, struggling to figure out what to say. "M-Melissa, please…" He said softly.
"There's nothing to discuss. I don't feel like talking about it, alright?" She told him getting frustrated. "It really doesn't matter. It's no big deal."
"You're clearly upset, Melissa… I'm assuming I did or said something wrong, and I really want to fix it."
"I don't want to talk about it Lucas, okay? I'm just tired, it's been a long week, and little things set me off. There's nothing for you to do!" She finally snapped, freezing up when she did. "I-I'm sorry…"
Lucas flinched a bit, his heart speeding up. "I… I-I'm sorry, Mel… I just… I-I don't like to see you upset…" He replied weakly.
"No, please don't get upset. I shouldn't have snapped." She said quickly, trying not to freak out. She had screwed up, snapping even though she had told herself not to. He was just trying to help. "I know you care, I'm just fine though."
Lucas nodded a bit, fidgeting with his sleeves nervously. "I'm… I'm sorry I upset you, Mel… even if you say I didn't, I-I'm sorry."
