"I would disagree, but I haven't really actually seen your father sober." She sighed, sliding her arm around his waist to pull him in to a hug. 'They're only acting like this because you're around…'
"I would disagree, but I haven't really actually seen your father sober." She sighed, sliding her arm around his waist to pull him in to a hug. 'They're only acting like this because you're around…'
"He's not very nice sober either, to be honest…" Lucas sighed. "I mean, he's not abusive, but he's very cold and distant and typically pretty snappy. Sometimes a little verbally abusive if he speaks at all."
"Really? Well then, I'll have to trust you. Personally, I wouldn't want to run into him again." She mumbled, toeing the ground with a soft frown.
"Neither do I… we really do need to call the police at some point, though. Before my wounds heal and we have no proof." Lucas said softly.
"Then we got to do it before I get grounded. So like, right now." Melissa mumbled, leaning into him gently, trying to relax herself.
Lucas sighed shakily and nodded. "I… alright. Let's do it." He pulled out his phone, his hand trembling a bit, and stared at the dialing screen nervously.
“Want me to do it?” She asked softly, rubbing his shoulder carefully. “I don’t mind doing it, if you can’t.”
He nodded again and held his phone out to Melissa, running his fingers through his hair anxiously. His heart was pounding hard in his chest and he was just trying to prepare himself to do this.
Dialing in the number, she brought the phone up to her ear and sucked in a deep breath. The phone rang in a low buzz, and she bounced her knee anxiously.
"911, what is your emergency?" The operator on the other line asked. Lucas listened with bated breath, his entire form trembling.
“I…” She paused, looking up to Lucas. “What do I say?” She mouthed to him, seeming to freeze up.
Lucas hesitated before taking the phone. "Um… h-hi. My father has been verbally and physically abusing me for a few years and I think he and I would both be safer if he was in prison?" He said awkwardly. "We'll send some officers to investigate the situation right away, sir. Where are you? Are you still in the house?" "No, I'm… I'm at a friends house." He told the operator his address. "Can I tell her your address?" He whispered to Melissa.
Glancing to the door frame, she sighed nodding. "Yeah, go ahead." Melissa whispered back, turning to face him. She gave him a soft smile, taking his hand in her own.
"I'm at (Melissa's address)." "Alright, we'll send a couple officers there too. They'll be there soon, okay?" "Yes, thank you, ma'am."
Once the phone was away from his ear, she patted his knee gently. "You did better than I could, now we just have to wait." She whispered, pulling back from him so she could stand up.
Lucas nodded and exhaled shakily. "I'll just… I'll wait outside so they don't have to come in…" He said quietly, standing and going out the front door to wait.
"Wait!" She called out softly, following him outside rather quickly. "Do you… do you want me to be with you? Or… or are you alright on your own?" Melissa asked him, taking his hand in her own.
"Um… if you think your parents won't get mad at you for being outside or something, it might be best if I'm not alone…" Lucas looked up at Melissa, still seeming quite nervous.
"As long as I don't leave my house, I'll be alright." She smiled, looping her arm around his waist. "Don't be nervous, this is for the best. I promise you."
Lucas nodded, sitting down on the front steps with Melissa to wait. He was shaking noticeably, especially his legs, and was still trying to steel himself for the conversation with the police.
At taking notice of his uneasiness, she let out a soft sigh. "What can I do to help you relax?" Melissa asked him, rubbing his shoulder tenderly.
"Probably nothing, to be honest… I won't be relaxed until they're gone and they believe me." Lucas heard sirens in the distance and sighed, his shaking jumping in intensity for a few seconds.
“Well, they’ll be here any second. So prepare yourself.” She whispered, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.
Lucas nodded, looking up again when the police cars arrived. He stood up unsteadily and headed over, Melissa in tow.
Melissa watched him carefully, not wanting to get too close. He’ll be fine, just give him a little space. She told herself, watching as they came up to the police car.
Lucas nodded or shook his head in reply to most of the officer's questions, showing them the bloodied bandages on his head and eventually taking off his shirt when asked. He was covered in bruises, some deep enough to even see separated fingers from the punches. There were also lots of little cuts around his ribs, but that wasn't what they were looking for.
Melissa found herself blushing immensely at seeing him shirtless, the same as she had the night before. She stayed quiet as they continued to ask him questions.
Lucas seemed to grow more tense and nervous as the conversation went on, but eventually, one of the officers got onto his walkie talkie, said something, and then the officers left. Lucas pulled his shirt back on and came back over to Melissa.
“How’d it go?” She asked softly, sliding her arms around his neck to pull him into a hug. “Are they going to take him?”
"Mhmm…" Lucas returned the hug, burying his face in Melissa's shoulder. "They're gonna take him… we've got plenty of evidence that I'm not lying…"
