Lucas huffed. "You just really want me to feel guilty, don't you?" He asked before shoving a bite of pancake into his mouth.
Lucas huffed. "You just really want me to feel guilty, don't you?" He asked before shoving a bite of pancake into his mouth.
"No, I just want you to eat." She smiled softly, dumping a scoop of pancake mix into the hot pan. "Because you're too scrawny." Melissa joked, not really meaning it.
"I can't help that…" Lucas whined, eating another bite of pancake. "M'trying my best, Melissa." He watched her making the pancakes, still intrigued by the process.
Rolling her eyes once more, she turned to face him. "Come on, I know you are." She hummed, glancing at the pancakes. "Do you want syrup for those? Or at least butter?"
"Oh! Um… sure. I forgot most people put stuff on their food…" Lucas got up and headed over to the pantry to retrieve the syrup.
"I was just offering Lu," Speaking softly, she felt a smile curl on her lips. "You don't have to make excuses, I just didn't want you to be… I don't, annoyed I guess." She shrugged turning back to the pan.
Lucas looked up from the pantry. "Hmm? I'm not annoyed, Mel, and I'm not trying to make excuses. It's honestly been so long since I've had like, actual food, that I forgot to not just eat it how it is."
Flipping the pancake over in the pan, she sighed softly. That was just terrible to think about. "Can I be brutally honest with you?" She asked softly, not facing him; she wasn't sure she could. "I don't want to start a fight, but it's been bothering me. A lot."
"Um… s-sure? Fire away, Mel…" Lucas replied nervously. The way she'd worded her sentences were definitely causing him some anxiety. Did I do something wrong?? Is she mad at me??
"You keep ignoring this question, and it makes me nervous." She sighed, looking back to him with her green eyes. "Why didn't you tell me what was going on? Do you not trust me?"
"I do trust you, Mel! I-I was just… I was scared, okay? I didn't want you to have to worry about me, and it wasn't as bad at first… but then it got worse, and I'd already been hiding it for a long time, and I thought… I-I thought you'd leave me if you found out I'd been hiding it from you… and my dad said he'd… h-he'd… k… kill me if I told anyone…"
Of course, his father threatened him. Of course he trusted her, but he was scared. 'Why am I such an idiot? Why does it always have to be about me? Other people have more important problems, I need to just get myself together.' Trying to blink back the tears she felt coming, her heart turned in her chest when she looked up to him. "I'm sorry."
Lucas rubbed at his own tears and shook his head. "D-Don't be sorry, Mel… I'm a horrible friend… I-I should've told you before it got bad, I just… I always figured it was just a one time thing, you know? I didn't think him getting mad at me for coming home late or whatever held much weight in the long run…"
"You aren't, don't say that." She whispered shutting off the stove so she could focus on him. Stepping up to him, she slid her arms around his waist to give him a hug. "I shouldn't be asking, I should know this." Melissa whispered, rubbing his back carefully.
Lucas returned the hug, trying to force himself to calm down. "Y-You've got every right to ask, Mel… I don't blame you for wanting to know…"
"But I knew." She whispered, feeling tears streak down her face. As long as he couldn't see her, she was Okay to let her tears fall. "I knew you wouldn't be able to tell me. Heck, I didn't tell you what was going on in my own life."
"I-I know, and I figured you were in a similar situation when I found out… I know you still trust me, Mel." Lucas sighed shakily.
That made her feel worse. He completely trusted her, and knew she trusted him. And yet, she still had doubts. "Are you alright? Did I start something up?" She asked softly, only now realizing how nice it was to be here in his arms. She felt perfectly safe, and really didn't want him to let go.
"No, no… I-I think I'm alright, don't worry about it, Mel." Lucas gave her a weak smile and kept hugging her, feeling more safe and comfortable in her embrace.
"I always do," She sighed, resting her eyes as she rested her head on his chest. Her tears had stopped, but were still staining her cheeks with a slight shimmer. "But I can try my best not to."
"I don't want you to feel bad, Mel… you didn't do anything wrong." Lucas held her closer and sighed quietly.
She found herself gripping at the fabric of his shirt, burying her face into his chest. "I don't know how to explain why I feel like I did something wrong." She whispered in frustration.
"Well, you didn't… I'm not mad at you, Mel. You've got nothing to worry about." Lucas gently played with Melissa's hair.
Pulling back, she looked up to him with a guilty look. 'That makes me worry more…' "Alright Lu, of you say so." She said softly, wiping the stray tears off of her face.
Lucas sighed, knowing nothing he said could reassure her. He hated it, but there really wasn't m much he could do. "Do you feel any better?" He asked hopefully.
"A little, yeah." She whispered, looking up to him with a slightly sad look. "I would feel best if I had known sooner, but clearly we can't change that. So having you still here is enough."
"Yeah… I'm really sorry, Mel. I wanted to tell you, I swear. I was just terrified of him." Lucas sighed quietly.
“I know Lu, and I understand.” She whispered, cupping his cheek in her hand. She wasn’t even thinking romantically, only caring. “Let me finish making breakfast, and then we can go watch a movie or something.
Lucas nodded and reluctantly released her so he could head back over to the table. "Anything in mind of what you want to watch?"
"Not really, maybe just like something cheesy." She shrugged checking the pancakes that she had shut the stove off on. "Guess these are scraps… did you want more? Or are you full?"
