Rook stuck her tongue out at Jade.
Rook stuck her tongue out at Jade.
Jade bit her tongue to keep from laughing at the childish response and let out a soft sound that could almost be called a sigh. ”Quiet night right now, isn't it?” she asked to change the subject.
Rook nodded a little. "Yes." she agreed. "A welcome thing, in this line of work."
”Most nights it is.” Jade admitted, not saying how she had almost been hoping for a fight. Though she was calmer now than when she started her patrol. ”It almost feels like we actually make a difference.”
Rook let out a soft sound. "Maybe we are. I hope we are, anyways. Though…I'm not sure sometimes."
”I know the feeling.” Jade nodded. ”I’m sure we all do.” she amended, thinking of all the other heroes… An involuntary shudder crept up her back at the thought of one.
Rook shook her head a little bit. "Yeah." she ran a hand through her hair.
Jade nodded and brought her attention back to the current moment… Or tried to at least. His cocky smile still haunted her. She rubbed the back of her neck nervously. ”Hey, Rook?” she started hesitantly.
"Yeah?" Rook asked, arching an eyebrow at Jade.
Jade cleared her throat. Should she really say anything to Rook right now? She wasn't sure if it was right… but she knew talking helped… or was supposed to…
”What do you think of Harbinger?” she asked softly.
"Harbinger…? Oh, right, him." Rook shrugged a little. "I don't know. He's…weird. I worked with him once…never again." she shuddered theatrically. "He's a bit of a creep."
Jade gave a small nod as Rook finished speaking, glad someone else sort of agreed with her. ”I noticed that too.” she admitted.
"Mhm. And maybe I wouldn't have minded if I was straight, but…this girl's only interested in other girls, thanks." Rook gestured to herself, shaking her head.
Jade almost laughed at Rook’s bluntness but didn't mind her friend’s stance. ”Does he know that?” she asked. ”I mean I tend to lean towards guys, myself, but I just am not interested in him.”
Rook shrugged a little bit. "I don't know. I made it quite clear that I wasn't interested in him, but I don't think he took the hint."
”I think he's incapable of taking a hint.” Jade scoffed angrily before she could stop herself.
Rook studied her. "Okay, what happened?" she asked, cocking her head to one side as she studied Jade.
Jade stiffened at the question. She didn't mean to say that. She didn't mean to imply anything… ”Nothing.” she said in a tight voice, not looking at Rook. ”I… I just want you to be careful around him. I don't trust him.”
"Brainwave." Rook's voice was firm. "What happened?"
Jade shook her head, really not wanting to talk about it… but if she didn't say anything… She turned to look at Rook. If I do nothing, I'm letting him get away with it… He might go after her next… She sighed at the realization. "He tried to attack me. He hired a gunman to snipe me with some drug so I was barely able to fight back." She said, fighting the tremble in her voice. "I did get away before anything happened except for a severe beating but he might try to improve the drug…" she trailed off to keep from breaking down.
Rook watched Jade, narrowing her eyes a little. "That bastard." she snarled. "Have you gone to anyone for help?"
Jade only nodded as her answer. She wasn't sure if she could speak yet without breaking down. It was best to not mention Killian’s name anyway. True, Rook would only know him by Hex but… She would leave him anonymous in this conversation.
Rook nodded a little. "Good. I don't know…how to take him out without getting cast as a villain, though."
Jade shook her head. ”Neither am I, really. But I’ll deal with it.” she said a little calmer. ”If we take down his reputation first it might help. I already have the information on the gunman.”
Rook nodded a little bit. "Alright." She replied. "That's good."
Jade gave a weak smile. ”Yeah, and I’m not completely doing this alone either.” she said. ”Only question is how to do it. How to get the information out there and have the right people believe it. Since he’s such a glory hound, some people seem to like him.”
Rook nodded. "I'll help you as much as possible." She replied softly. "But…who did you go to for help?"
”Thank you, Rook.” Jade smiled at her. ”A friend.” she answered. ”I went to a good friend.”
Rook nodded. "Alright. Well, maybe this friend could help? Testify, you know."
Jade shrugged. ”I could ask him but… I think a judicial setting might make him uncomfortable.” she said, trying not to laugh at the mental image of Killian in costume on the witness stand.
