I agree with Jyn. Villainy is too much of a broad area to simply say "they do it for fun" or "because they want revenge".
A lot of people fall into villainy because of being mislead by someone they trusted, or being influenced by those around them into believing that it is what they should do.
He could be mislead by an instructor at the school, or simply get caught up in the thrill of the kill (several serial killers call killing the ultimate power trip, maybe he's always been the odd one out at school and turns to killing as a way to get that high)
