Every time a car sounded on the street outside, she tensed, shoulders taut and hands clutching each other until the second it passed. It was a lot of these moments and twinges of disappointment before, finally, a car pulled into her driveway. She was up in an instant, standing right next to her shut front door.
Elliot unbuckled his belt and looked at the door of the house. He grabbed his backpack and stuffed elephant, holding it close to his body. The lady led him to the door with a clipboard in her hand.
There was a knock at the door. Alice wrenched it open, her tied blonde hair bouncing in her excitement. "Hey!" she said slightly loudly, grinning from ear to ear.
Elliot ran a hand through his hair and frowned 'Who is this lady?' he wondered
The lady smiled back and walked closer "hello, I have brought your son back."
Alice clasped her hands together, the role of mother naturally taking over. “Elliot, oh my god,” she murmured, looking down at him. She got to her knees and pulled him into an impossibly tight hug, holding him close to her. “Welcome,” she breathed into his ear.
Elliot tended when the lady hugged him and awkwardly patted her back. Breaking the hug, he took a few steps back and hugged his elephant. "Um, hi?" He asked
Alice stood up straight, her expression frozen in the previous smile. "I'm sorry… I've missed you, honey. You've been away for a while," she justified, hugging herself instead and meeting the official's gaze.
The official rolled her eyes and pushed the clipboard ahead. "Need you to sign these papers and provide proof that this is you and then we'll be on our way." She said, faking a smile.
Alice nodded meekly, gently pulling Elliot further into the doorway. She took the papers and, leaning against the front wall, quickly signed off the kid. “Here you go.” She handed it back.
Elliot gently brushed her hand off and took a few steps back, looking around the outside of the house and taking into account any small details.
The official nodded and took the clipboard back and turned around without saying goodbye. The car pulled out of the driveway zoomed off down the street
Alice pulled the door shut, then turned around and leaned against looking over at Elliot. “Well… welcome home. Do you want me to bring your things upstairs?” she offered with a smile,
"No, I can do that. Where is my room?" He asked holding his suitcase close to him.and looking up the stairs. The shadow of decorations seemed to be looking at him, curiously waiting for some movement
Helen let the smile slip. “Okay. It’s up the stairs and last door to your right.” Her tine was still kind, just slightly more distant.
