Quinn continued walking.
Aster glanced over at her eith a soft chuckle. "Wonderland is out to get everyone." He replied.
Quinn continued walking.
Aster glanced over at her eith a soft chuckle. "Wonderland is out to get everyone." He replied.
Charlotte sighed. "If I sprain my wrist one more time, I'll find Wonderland's wrist and sprain it right back," she swore somewhat annoyedly. Her wrist was throbbing, which didn't exactly improve her mood.
Aster walked over. "Do you want me to take a look?" He asked, looking at her.
Charlotte waved him off. "I'll wrap it up later," she said unconcernedly , still glancing around.
Aster nodded. "Alright." He replied, and started looking around.
"I think I've found one," Charlotte called after a few minutes. The pond she had found was glowing rather brightly, and swirling around. "Or at least I've found a highly unusual natural phenomenon."
Aster came over, squinting at the pond. "Hm. Quinn!" He called.
Quinn walked over. "Yeah, i know."
Charlotte stepped back to lean against a tree. "Well? Is this a portal?"
Quinn dipped a hand into the water. "Uhm…i dont think so." He replied. "Sorry."
Charlotte cursed under her breath and started walking in the opposite direction. "Of course it isn't. Because clearly, if something goes well for me, the world will end," she muttered.
Quinn sighed, standing. His hand dripped glowing water back down into the pool.
Aster chased after her. "Lottie, please calm down. Its only the second of many possible locations."
"I'm perfectly calm, Aster," Charlotte answered without looking at him. "It's not even frustrating that I know it'll be the very last place. I'm not upset even a little, and I really don't need you to tell me to calm down."
"You aren't acting perfectly calm." He replied, crossing his arms. "And I'm starting to get sick of your constant attitude. All your whining about "Wonderland this"! And "Wonderland that"!" He shook his head. "We get it. You hate it here and think we're all idiots. But you don't need to act like every second spent here is killing you. There are worse fates than Wonderland."
Charlotte spun around. "If you don't want to hear me, then get out of earshot," she growled lowly. "You don't know anything about me. Don't patronize me for not understanding anything in not just another country, but another dimension. Other dimensions haven't even been proven in my world. And in my world, I'm to be silent and proper and polite and if I ever want to do anything on my own, I have to leave the house, and I'm sick of being told to adjust my attitude. If you'd like to tell me the same, feel free to write a well thought out letter so that I might burn it. And don't you sigh at me. Don't even exhale. Every time you breathe, I can hear the contempt. Please. Just. Stop."
Aster crossed his arms, shaking his head. "I wasn't patronizing anyone. I am simply saying that a pleasant outlook can make the world of difference. You think that I wanted to work for the crown? Work for the same monarchy that held my grandfather in chains and drive my father to…" He shook his head slightly. "I hated the idea. But i went in with a neutral outlook, and, well…" His eyes flicked to Quinn. "The monarchy isn't what i was expecting. Neither is the palace. You have hardly given Wonderland a chance, and as far as i can see, you havent even tried to understand. So don't tell me not to patronize you for not understanding, if you haven't made an effort to try."
"Excuse me? Do you really, I mean completely honestly think that I'm not TRYING TO UNDERSTAND? I'm trying VERY HARD to understand. I'm not a 6 year old, you see. I don't make odd faces or announce loudly to the world when I'm trying to understand something. What I announce is when I don't understand. Because in England, I'm not required to understand. I'm not expected to understand." She took a shaky breath. "Can you please just stop?"
Aster shook his head. "Just get in the carriage." He replied, walking away. He spoke to Quinn for a moment, and Quinn headed to the carriage.
Charlotte ran to the carriage and slammed the door behind her before putting her hands over her face and sobbing, curling into a small ball. You are an actual child. Why are they even trying to help?
Quinn came into the carriage, and froze, closing the door quietly. He hesitated for a moment, then sat down beside her, lightly putting a hand on her back. "Charlotte? What's the matter?" He asked softly.
Charlotte froze for several moments before answering. "I'm just being stupid. But I - I really, really don't like being yelled at," she said quietly.
Quinn nodded. "And i don't likr being touched." He shrugged slightly. "I don't think Aster meant to hurt you, he just…" He shrugged again.
Charlotte shook her head. "I'm not hurt," she mumbled. "It's- I'm fine."
"I didn't mean physically. He wouldn't do that, love. I meant that I don't think he meant to make you cry." Quinn's face twisted an an almost sardonic smile.
"No, I know what you meant. It isn't his fault, it's mine. Because I'm a stupid child. But I'm also not happy enough to be a child, which means I'm a disappointment. And not just to my aunt this time!" She said with false cheeriness before stopping. "Sorry, it's - er - sorry."
He shook his head, the strange smile vanishing. "Try not insulting yourself. It makes the world of difference in how people see you. And sometimes how you see yourself."
"If I don't insult myself, others will do it for me, and it hurts more when they do it," Charlotte answered quietly.
He shrugged. "That's why you do it. Because if i jokingly or not so jokingly say that since i sleep with so many people, i must need someone else to warm my bed every night, i hurts less if someone else says something similar. You just phrase it as a joke or whatever, not an insult."
Charlotte nodded numbly. "Sure, that's - alright, I'll - I'll try that… I guess. Not sure how that's any different, but alright," she mumbled blankly.
He shrugged. "It has to do with your outlook. Trick yourself into thinking it, and eventually it becomes true."
Charlotte unfurled slightly and propped herself up on her elbow. "That's really not - I mean yes, that's- excellent idea, er, good advice," she said with an unusually high-pitched laugh.
